The warm summer months are just ahead and that means, it’s time to hit the beach! But is your skin ready for months of fun in the sun? Here’s our guide on how to get silky, perfectly bronzed skin all summer long:
Step 1: Exfoliation is the key to glowing skin year-round, but it’s especially important now. Slough off dead skin cells that have accumulated on your skin from the dry winter months. Massage an exfoliant over skin gently, paying special attention to particularly dry areas like elbows, knees and feet. Try a scrub like Repechage’s Pomegranate Cran-Apple All Over Body Scrub ($36), which is so incredibly yummy-smelling. For the face, try a gentle and oil-free scrub like Elemis’ Gentle Rose Exfoliator ($38). Just completing this step will make your skin look much more radiant than before, guaranteed!
Step 2: Moisturize! There’s no escaping this step. If you want your skin to look great, moisturization is the key to fighting off dry, dull-looking skin. It’ll also help retain pigment longer and more evenly, which is vital if you plan on using a self-tanner. Our suggestions? Olay Quench Therapy ($10), Jurlique Body Care Lotion ($23) or Tocca’s Crema da Sogna ($45) for an intensive fix.
Step 3: If you are going to tan this summer, self-tanner is one of your best bets for glowy, bronzed skin. Today, there’s a bevy of different products to choose from. Our recommendations? Traditional lotions can be a little tricky if you’ve never used them before; for even application, try applying with a makeup sponge. If splotchiness appears, it can be evened out with moisturizer or by exfoliating. For the face, try Jergens Natural Glow Face Moisturizer ($6); for the body, Dove Energy Glow Daily Moisturizer ($8) is consistently named as one of the best. If you have trouble with even application, L’Oreal Bronze Sublime ($10) are easy-to-use towlettes that include Vitamin E and AHAs. Want to avoid getting it on your hands altogether? A spray, like Model Co. Airbrush Tan In A Can ($8), is great for hard to reach areas, as well as produces smooth and natural-looking tans.
Step 4: Sunscreen should be part of your daily ritual, but it’s a must-have if you’re going to spend hours in the sun. Before you hit the beach, slather on sunscreen 30 minutes prior to protect your skin from harmful rays. Then, re-apply every two hours or after a dip in the water (even if it says waterproof!). I love Neutrogena’s Healthy Defense Oil-Free Sunblock Stick SPF30 ($7) if I’m on the go. It’s tiny and light to just toss into your beach bag, thick enough to feel like it’s working and oil-free so it won’t clog pores or cause breakouts. If you like the traditional lotion, we recommend the much raved about Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense 30 ($35) or cult favorite La Roche-Posay Anthelios SX ($29).
Step 5: Skip the makeup. If you really can’t go without it, apply a coat of waterproof mascara like MaxFactor’s Lash Perfection Mascara ($7). Swipe on some lip balm like Juice Beauty’s Organic SPF 15 Tinted Lip Moisturizer ($15) to finish.
Step 6: Soothe overly warm skin after long days in the summer skin. One option is using a body mist such as Essencia’s Cranberry Hydrating Body Mist ($12) to refresh, hydrate and purify skin. The Hydra Soleil Deep Relief Tea Gel ($36) is another wonderful option that will instantly cool, soothe and moisturize sun exposed skin. Or try our DIY aloe vera solution.
