The W Hotel Los Angeles in Westwood recently got a makeover and I happily checked out their newly revamped restaurant, NINETHIRTY (named after the hotel’s location). My BF and I made reservations for a Friday night several weeks ago, and I must say that it was an absolute treat.
With the famed Chef Monique King at its helm, NINETHIRTY launched a bold new dinner menu of “Modern American Cuisine with Global Influences”for its re-opening this past November. The cuisine clearly reflects their philosophy of incorporating flavors and ingredients from around the world, offering up selections such as Moroccan Roasted Chicken, Grilled Molasses Glazed Quail and Garlic Frizzled Green Beans and Curried Carrots.
When we arrived, we were promptly led into the incredibly sleek, chic dining room, which was designed by renowned Toronto design firm Yabu Pushelberg. The decor played with light and dark – from the “intricate hand-crafted panels of woven rattan and carved coconut shells” to the “12-foot white sandstone bar, topped with dark wood and backed by a woven screen.” The result lends itself well to those who prefer a traditional dining experience, as well as those who like a more lounge-y atmosphere. We were seated in one of their candlelit booths, which made it cozy and intimate – perfect for a night out with close friends as well as a date.
First on the agenda — appetizers and drinks. I ordered one of their signature drinks, the yummy Peach Bellini-tini, which is uniquely made with vodka. For the starter course, I chose the Pan-Roasted Wild Mushrooms, served with Fontina Fondue, Polenta Cake and Truffle Oil. Clearly influenced by Italian cuisine, the mushrooms paired perfectly with the creamy polenta cake and sauce. This one would be an absolute hit for even the pickiest eaters. I could’ve eaten two of these! The BF ordered the Seared Diver Scallops with Butternut Squash Puree, Spicy Mango Chermoula and Cinnamon-Braised Fennel. Again, another delicious dish! The scallops were cooked to perfection and the bold flavors would satisfy any foodie. We detected hints of curry that provided an interesting dimension.
Next up was the main course. I ordered the Smoked Confit Duck Leg with Caramelized Garlic Sweet Potato Mash, Warm Mushroom-Frisee Salad and BBQ Jus. I’m actually a huge foodie and don’t write the following statement lightly: This was one of the most delicious duck dishes I’ve ever had – perfectly balanced between spicy and sweet! The braised duck was smoky and tender, paired wonderfully with the spicy sauce and sweet potatoes. I absolutely loved it and recommend it to anyone who plans on dining at NINETHIRTY. The BF ordered the Grilled Prime Tenderloin paired with Roasted Fingerling Potatoes, 930 Steak Sauce, Sourdough Onion Rings, Grilled Asparagus and Fresh Grated Horseradish; according to him, it was very tender and the sauce was wonderfully matched. Plus, the onion rings were quite unique. He described it as sponge-like in texture with great flavor.
We finished with a berry-topped Panna Cotta, which proved to be the perfect ending to a delicious and delightful meal. It was creamy, smooth and rich — yet light so that it doesn’t send you into a food coma. Let’s just put it this way: it inspired us to research panna cotta recipes when we got home.
Honestly, this swanky dining experience was a home run. If you live in the Los Angeles area or are coming to visit, I urge you to make a reservation (310.443.8211) to try out the delectable menu. NINETHIRY is located in the W Hotel Los Angeles at 930 Hilgard Avenue in Westwood.
