New York Fashion Week AW08: Betsey Johnson

Betsey Johnson’s shows are always imaginative and fun to watch, and her fall collection was showcased against a backdrop that suggested a poetry slam at a smoky cafe (complete with bongo players). The first part of the collection featured berets and black leather, with a hip, beatnik feel to it all. The latter part of her collection lost me a bit–some of her colorful prints strangely reminded me of clown costumes, and the pale make up and bright red lips didn’t help. (Not a fan of anything that reminds me of clowns, but that’s my own thing.) I liked the bright, solid sweater dresses and more subtle prints. Betsey Johnson marked 30 years of being in fashion with this show, and her whimsical, wild vision continues on.

I bet when Betsey Johnson is 80, she’ll still be hipper than the 20 year olds around the time.
