Going Long

One trend that we’ve been seeing a lot of lately is the maxi dress–both on the runway, and on celebrities. Now that the weather finally warming up, I’ve been dress shopping like crazy. Since I’m on the short side, I’m a bit hesitant to go long with dresses. It’s tough to wear a long dress without resembling a tent and drowning in a sea of fabric. For some inspiration, I looked to a few stylish stars to see how they carried it off, casually and on the red carpet.

Kristen Bell wore a gorgeous, strapless Jenni Kayne tie gown to the premiere of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I love the bright blue and white pattern and how she accessorized with a beautiful Bulgari necklace. Angelina Jolie went for a walk around New Orleans with her children in a soft, grey Rachel Pally caftan dress. She looked comfortable and effortlessly stylish. Eva Longoria wore a bright, twist-tied T-Bags maxi dress. Mommies-to-be, check out Gwen Stefani playing with cutie Kingston in a long Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent dress. I think what makes these dresses look so lovely on these ladies (well, besides their unrealistically amazing bodies) is a closer, slimmer silhouette and a floor-skimming length. Despite being super long, their dresses fit closely around the hips as to not create a look that balloons out. The lengths of the dresses are also perfectly tailored so that they don’t drag, and instead gracefully skim the toes. Eva Longoria paired her T-Bags dress with a pair of wedges for a lean look with an illusion of height.

Along with the ones above, we found some pretty maxi dresses by these designers that fit the bill: Tibi, Alice + Olivia, James Perse, Gerard Darel, Lauren Conrad (my guilty pleasure!), and Ella Moss. Share your suggestions with us on how to go long and take on the maxi dress look!

I have a maxi-dress I wear whenever I’m in Miami– for breakfast (which is normally around 11:00). I guess it’s time to bring it out up here! I’m also obsessed with finding some dresses this season.

michelle jonas makes some cute maxi dresses as well. i love the ones by t-bags since they’re so colorful for summer.
