Get Social at Citrus

Several Saturdays past, we reserved a table for two at Citrus at Social. My BF and I went try out the amazing French-California cuisine, developed by renowned chefs Michel Richard, Remi Lauvand and restauranteur Jeffrey Chodorow.
Located right next to Social Hollywood, this restaurant is located in a beautifully vibrant, airy space that complements the restaurant’s name and menu. Imagine sheer yellow curtains lining the entire room, set off by citrus-green lined banquettes. The tables – mostly set up around columns or booths – allow for both privacy and socializing — all depending on what you request. Silver accents and mirrors reflected light, while chic and modern cylinder chandeliers hung down to offer flattering amber lighting.
After walking in, we were greeted promptly by the hostess. Since our table wasn’t quite ready yet, she suggested that we hang out at the chic bar for a cocktail. For those who prefer not to partake in a yummy drink, hang out in the modern, candlelit waiting area. Once our table was ready, we were escorted to a banquette and not long after being seated, our water glasses were filled and bread was on the table. Our attentive waiter introduced himself and came by to offer a few suggestions, before letting us have some time to decide what we’d like. Truly, perusing the menu is no easy task. You will want to order absolutely everything!
For appetizers, we began with the Onion Tart, which was topped with crème fraiche and absolutely reminded me of a delicate French pizza (yum!). We also ordered the Mosaic, which possibly could’ve been my favorite dish of the night. Thin slices of carpaccio – ahi, scallop and beef – represent “surf, turf and earth.” I can’t even explain how delicate and divine this dish was. It’s an absolute must-order. Other diners raved about the Lobster “Begula” Pearls and the Cuttlefish Carbonara.
For the main entrée, I chose the Artic Char, with pancetta, potato grits and balsamic vinegar drizzle. It was filling, without being overly rich. The fish was cooked perfectly and matched well with the salty pancetta and sweet balsamic. The BF ordered the Lobster Fennel, with tomato, fava bean and licorice jus. This earthy dish will easily please the pickiest of eaters, and again, fills you up without pushing you over the edge. If we really dared to push ourselves (or rather, our stomachs), we also must admit that the Frites and Tator Tots, both would’ve made amazing sides. It sounds ordinary, but I promise you that they absolutely looked decadently delish and not your ordinary guilty pleasure fried food. Other recommended dishes were the Roasted Chicken with garlic and tater tots, the 72 Hour Short Rib with frites and the Lobster Burger with crème fraiche and chips.
By this point, we were very full. But we also couldn’t leave without dessert, since Michel Richard is famous for his delectable creations. We ordered the Orange Souffle and the Mushroom Vacherin. For those who prefer something light and fruity, the Orange Souffle was the perfect ending. Very citrusy, and so very appropriate for this restaurant. The true standout, however, was the Mushroom Vacherin (don’t worry, no actual mushrooms are in this; it’s just shaped like one!). This chocolate concoction utterly unique and unlike any other dessert I’ve ever seen. You crack into the chocolate exterior to find a meringue and cool creamy chocolate center. It really is the perfect balance between light and rich. For those who have tried it…you may have said the exact same thing my BF exclaimed: “This is the best dessert EVER!”
Overall, the food is elegant, but very fun and approachable. More importantly, it’s delicious! If you’re in LA, stop over at Citrus at Social – whether you want to socialize with the Hollywood elite, or just want a dinner that you won’t be forgetting anytime soon!
