The New York Blow Dry Bar

A few weeks ago, I visited Blow, the New York Blow Dry Bar for a curl and blow out before a night out. I’ve always loved curly hair, but could never do it on my own without looking like a puffball, so I trusted the talented experts at Blow to help me achieve my desired look.

I visited their newest location on the Upper East side, which just opened upstairs at 843 Lexington Ave (between 64th & 65th). I immediately felt comfortable in their playful and casual space, and especially loved how the floor to ceiling windows overlooked the bustling street. The day I went for my appointment was rainy and my styling booth was right against the windows. I felt there was something quite charming about looking out.

It’s pretty difficult to describe the details of a blowout – partially because I can only make a shampoo, conditioning, and blow dry sound so exciting – but also because as a layman, I really can’t describe all the details and expertise that goes into making hair look wonderful. I wish I could tell you step by step how my stylist teased volume into my hair and get every strand to behave perfectly; but if I could, I wouldn’t be visiting blow out salons in the first place! I can tell you though, that my hair was sectioned off and each section was smoothed out and styled with extreme care. My stylist even factored in the fact that it was rainy and gave me a little more bounce in my curls than I had originally asked for, anticipating that the weather will weigh them down a little when I step outside. I have very stubborn hair and getting it to look soft and curly the way I’ve always wanted it was a feat that took over an hour. But the end result was fantastic: perhaps one of the best hair days I’ve ever had!

The waiting time also wasn’t that bad. In addition to pleasant conversation with my stylist, I was also offered a manicure. What an ingenious idea! Nothing I love more than efficiency so it was great getting my hair and hands made pretty at the same time! I sure walked out of Blow looking a lot sunnier than the weather outside.

Blow has a downtown location in addition to the uptown one I visited. What’s great is that both accept walk ins so you can just pop into which ever one you happen to be closest to whenever the urge (or need) strikes. Although they are known for their blowouts and styling services, both locations also do cuts and colors. I also love that this place delivers all the glam and style without any attitude. There is nothing stuffy or snobby about the place or people and they maintain a very fun, girly vibe. This is the type of place that every fabulous New York girl needs – the service and results you would expect from a high end salon coupled with the convenience and comfort of being able to walk into your favorite neighborhood “Bar.”
