Paige Adams-Geller is the founder of Paige Premium Denim, one of the most beloved denim brands by women worldwide. Having been a fit model for numerous denim labels (many of which had male designers at its helm), Paige sought out to create classic styles, washes and fits – for real women, by a woman. Now, the label also includes men’s, maternity and kids lines in addition to women’s. And who’s worn her jeans? Just about every celebrity you can think of – and most of the women we know. Paige kindly took time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions for us – dishing about her personal closet staples to her tips on finding the perfect jean (to make your butt look great – because that’s what really counts, right?). Read on!
The Daily Obsession: You began as a fit model for top denim brands. How do you think that experience has shaped your brand, and helped differentiate you from other denim labels?
Paige Adams-Geller: I got to learn the ins and outs of the business by observing some of the most innovative and creative designers in the industry. I learned about seam placement, pocket structure and more. But more than anything I saw a hole! Most of the designers were men; they didn’t understand a women’s body, her curves and her desire for a classic jean. I was able to take what I learned from them and create a product that puts a women’s perspective on it.
TDO: You’re one of the very few premium denim designer to incorporate larger sizes into your line. How did it come about that you broke that 24-32 mold?
PAG: A lot of designers have an idea of their ideal customer – that was the mold I wanted to break. I wanted every girl to be able to wear my designs not just tall girls or slim girls, etc. I had grown up in the modeling industry and knew what kind of mentality it breeds, and I wanted to fight that kind of conformity.
TDO: You are launching a new division of your brand: Paige Black Label. Tell us more about it, why you decided to develop this collection, and how it came about.
PAG: I love high end fashion, but that doesn’t always translate to denim. This was a way for me to create great fitting trousers, slacks and more and allow my love of design to really come out. The line is full of trousers, jacket, skirts and dresses – all made with the same attention to fit and detail – but this time the fabrics are fine Italian wools, supple leathers and other luxurious pieces.
TDO: As a designer, you obviously know what works and what doesn’t work on women’s bodies, especially when it comes to denim. What are some tips women can take with them when shopping for a new pair of jeans?
PAG: My top tips:
1. Chose a pair of jeans that is right for YOU! Trends act only as guide points – if you feel silly in flares or skinnies, then don’t do it. Wear what you feel comfortable in.
2. Do the sit down test. If your bootie pops out the jeans are too low!
3. Pick a rise that doesn’t give you a muffin top. The jeans should graze your stomach and make you feel slim.
4. Chose a leg opening that makes you feel balanced: girls with wide shoulders should chose a flare, a boyish figure looks amazing in a high waisted style and so on…
5. Jeans should be tight! Buy your jeans as tight as you can. They will stretch and mold to your body better in the long run. Loose jeans just get looser.
TDO: When it comes to buying a pair of jeans, we all know that jeans have to fit perfectly – especially when it comes to the behind. Though pockets can make a difference, it still remains a challenge since we are all of different shapes and sizes. Do you have any tips for finding the perfect pair?
PAG: Once again, find what’s right for you. For a smaller bum, I suggest a flap pocket; it perks up the rear and adds shape. For a larger bum, choose a pocket that sits higher and is in a dark wash. The one thing that doesn’t work on anyone is pockets that sit below the bum and go on to the leg. The make your bootie disappear! TDO: What do you see as upcoming trends in the denim market – from the cuts to the washes?
PAG: Flares are probably the biggest trend at the moment – that real 70’s, vintage look is hot. But the biggest thing is that trends are becoming classics! The skinny is here to stay and the boot is coming back! Destructed denim is coming back too as well, as really dark shades of blue. And colored denim will definitely remain hot!
TDO: What is your favorite style of jeans from your line?
PAG: Probably the Benedict Canyon jean. It has a classic rise and slim boot cut opening – a great jean to slip on whether you’re going to be in heels or flats. I also love the Skyline Ankle Peg. It’s a refined version of our skinniest jean. It grazes the ankle – so cute for summer or to be tucked into boots in the winter.
TDO: Does living in LA influence your brand? If so, how?
PAG: YES! All of my jeans are named after streets in Los Angeles! That California girl vibe is definitely infused into my designs as well.
TDO: What are your closet staples – aside from denim?
PAG: Shoes! They can make any outfit change in an instance. I love Christian Louboutins and Prada wedges are the best. I mostly wear heels, a great boot cut or skinny and a feminine tank – either a camisole or blouse.
TDO: If you couldn’t be a designer and had to choose any other job, what would it be?
PAG: Rock star…Faith Hill is my hero!
TDO: What’s next for Paige Premium Denim?
PAG: To continue on our foundation – to make great, high quality jeans and pieces that actually fit…great!
