Revisiting the Classics

August 26th, 2008 by joie

If you are anything like me, at least once a week you look in your overstuffed closet brimming with clothes and think: “I have nothing to wear.” Countless minutes later, your bed is strewn with rejected outfits and you think, “I need to start shopping more judiciously.”

If this scenario sounds familiar to you, Nina Garcia (of Project Runway and Elle magazine fame) is here to offer some guidance with her new book, “The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Might Own.” Literally ranging from A-Z, Nina has listed out her favorite must-have pieces that are essential to a well stocked closet and prevent that dreaded “I have nothing to wear” syndrome that we all sometimes face.

Although some of the classic items you expect are in here (ex: “Little Black Dress,” “The Trenchcoat”), Nina also adds a few items that were a surprise to me including the Frye Harness boot (which I will now need to try), as well as Vans (yes, who knew that Vans sneakers would be a closet essential for Nina!).  She also helpfully incorporates her favorite brands, fashion history, as well as suggestions on how to wear the items in her book, making it the great fashion coffee table book. What I like most about the book is although many of the items that Nina recommends in the book are classics, she encourages her readers to “put their own spin on things,” and reminds them they should be individualized to fit each person’s style. As Yves St. Laurent put it, “Fashions fade, but style is eternal” and Nina’s book perfectly supports that.

Check out the book for yourself today at www.amazon.com.

And for those lucky enough to live in New York, Nina Garcia will be at Saks Fifth Ave’s Shoe Floor 10022 for a book signing tomorrow August 27 from 2pm-4pm.  Anyone who buys a full priced pair of shoes will receive her own copy!
