Erica Weiner Jewelry

As you may have noticed, I’m on the hunt for great accessories to jazz up my wardrobe this fall. Accessories designer Erica Weiner has some stunning pieces that would make the perfect addition to my jewelry box…and probably yours, too!

After I emailed Erica asking her to tell me more about her line and how she got started, I was totally impressed. It’s totally inspiring for any designers – and really, any entreprenuers! “I was inspired to start my own line of jewelry because I was initially a fashion samplemaker for Imitation of Christ, and I saw how difficult it was (and how long it took) to make a single garment. Tons of money and time!” says Erica. “I was working so, so hard during Fashion Week in 2003, that one weekend I treated myself to a trip to the jewelry district, where I had heard from a friend that there was a warehouse full of antique jewelry parts. I wanted to do something creative, for myself, that wasn’t making clothes. I went, bought a bag of tarnished brass charms, and was totally hooked. The earrings I made got so many compliments that I was able to quit my day job six months later and live off of my own designs.” The result is an entire collection full of quirky, but gorgeous pieces that is very versatile for most wardrobes.

The one I’m craving is the delicate Ginkgo necklace. “The Ginkgo necklace was inspired simply by the vintage Japanese leaf charms I found. They’re such a great example of Japanese design: really detailed, really geometric with clean lines, and ornamental details that show up in the material. They’re almost like a printed textile, with the embossed leaves. The circular locket complimented all the corners and angles in the ginkgo charm,” explains Erica.

Another favorite is the new Herkimer Diamond Solitaire ring, which recently made its debut. (It also happens to be one of Erica’s top picks as well.) Made from six-sided, double-terminated quartz crystals, these stones basically masquerade as diamonds…and are quite impressive. I love the raw quality to it, which adds a boldness and makes this piece stand out. For edgier pieces, go for the designer’s favorites: the Bronze Pelvis Bone Necklace and the Bronze Hummingbird Skull necklace. They have a bit of a downtown, hip feel to them, but still remain delicate and very wearable everyday.
