FashionHow To: Transition Your Summer Wardrobe into Fall

We all love the start of a new season, especially fall, mainly because it means new clothes!  That was my favorite thing for back to school – buying shiny new school supplies, and most importantly, the outfit for the first day.  But what are you supposed to do with all the summer clothes still hanging in your closet?

That is exactly the dilemma we will be discussing in today’s “How To;” how to transition the clothes you have from summer to fall so that you can merely invest in a few key new pieces and not have to replace all of your clothes.

First, a look at some celebrity inspiration:

What can we learn from these stylish ladies?

The Importance of the Scarf: We’ve all heard this before, but accessories are the key to an outfit and the big accessory for fall is still scarves.  The good thing is that the summer scarves you have been using can still be used for fall and will actually be useful now in keeping your neck warm!  Wear yours with a summer t-shirt dress like Ashley and a pullover sweater and you will be looking chic, while adding a great pop of color around the neck that will draw attention to your face.  Want some advice? Check out our former piece on “How to: Wear Scarves Year Round” and our latest piece about Peace Treaty scarves.

The Perfect Leather Jacket:  Readers at TDO may already know about my fondness of leather jackets since I featured it as my lust list item.  However, I still believe that the perfect leather jacket is the best way to really transition a summer item into fall.  It adds just the perfect amount of contrast to any of your remaining flowery summer dresses, dresses up your basics, and is ideal for layering.  Alexa Chung does it perfectly here, layering a button down shirt, cardigan, and vintage leather jacket together.  Urban Outfitters has affordable stylish versions with the byCorpus Leather Bomber Jacket or the Silence & Noise Leather Jacket.

Layering with Tights: The most cost effective way to carry that dress from summer to fall?  Add some tights and a new shoe to usher it into the new season.  Tights are still hot for fall, and I personally love the new patterned tights that are out!  Spanx has new versions of patterned tights and I think that their new Antique Lace Tights are very 1920s flapper inspired and romantic for fall.  Looking at them makes me want to pair them on with a classic shirtdress and head to a quaint old cafe on a nice autumn day with a good book and a nice cup of tea.  If I really want to splurge this season, I will go for the Wolford Opaque Matte Tight in black, which are the most matte tights you can buy (the key to making you look as long and lean as possible) and also important for keeping you warm during any temperature drops.  The ultimate source for tight inspiration is Gossip Girl—have you seen the genius way tights have been incorporated into every episode?icon

The Boyfriend Cardigan: The ultimate layering peace for throwing on over a tshirt and jeans or a leftover summer dress.  Additionally, the cardigan is incredibly versatile (for ideas, see our “How to: Wear A Cardigan” piece.)  The look for fall is the long cardigan, which adds a relaxed slouchy feel to any outfit.  A great version here is the one worn by Liv Tyler in the Gap ads, and I bought my perfect one last season from Club Monaco.  Rachel Bilson pairs her with a summer short and tank top, demonstrating how it can help transcend a summer outfit into the new season.
