Right after we saw the Tracy Reese show, Carolyn and I were excited to stumble upon James Aguiar, stylist and fashion expert extraordinaire, catching a break in between his busy schedule of shows. You may recognize him from “The Look for Less” on the Style channel, as the host of “Full Frontal Fashion,” or as the former fashion director of NYC department store institution, Bergdorf Goodman.
We couldn’t help but seize the opportunity to ask him a few questions about his favorites for Fall (because Spring 2009 is great and all, but we want to know what we should buy NOW) and his thoughts thus far about the Spring collections.
Fall Trends for Men: The return of the dressed up man. James sees men beginning to fully embrace the suit, thanks to the proliferation of numerous menswear designers who are all designing fabulous suits. His favorite? Lanvin – for its perfect mix of trendy and classic.
Fall Trend for Women: Lace. Enough said.
Favorite Designers for Women: Balenciaga for the night out. Michael Kors for the casual day to day.
Spring Trends for Women: James cited “the jumpsuit” as a trend he has been seeing over and over. When I heard him say this, my heart dropped. The jumpsuit? Nooooo—I have yet to see this being successfully pulled off even on the most gorgeous of Hollywood celebrities! Fortunately, James and I were on the same page: as we incredulously asked if he had any advice for pulling it off, he flippantly replied “Don’t do it!” and my faith in him was restored.
Note: Sadly, the day after our interview, I was trolling through the front row pics for Miss Sixty and I spotted TDO favorite Blake Lively wearing the dreaded jumpsuit (see pic.) It pains me to say this, but this was not my favorite look of hers (I’m sorry Blake, you normally look gorgeous and I applaud you at least for trying to take a fashion risk!) Nevertheless, it only reaffirms my initial thought: if Blake can’t even pull of a jumpsuit without looking like a gas station attendant, there’s no way my 5’3 shrimpy self is going to even attempt to try it on.
