Best Products for Year Long Wavy Hair

I often feel that my hair is neither here nor there- it’s long, thick and one big puffy wave.  Most days I straighten it because it’s the easiest thing I know how to do.  But since romantic waves are all over the runways this season, I developed a growing obsession with getting my hair to hold curls.  Of course, if I could have my way, I’d get a blow out every 3 days and maintain- but as those can get quite pricey, I had to search for easy DIY techniques and products.  Below, I’ve listed my favorites from all the ones I tried in the past few months.

1.  FHI Heat Curling Iron: I’m a huge fan of the FHI Heat 1in curling iron.  The ceramic tourmaline barrel heats up in just a few seconds and there’s a digital display tells you exactly how hot the iron is getting.   I really like this product because it doesn’t frizz out my hair like a lot of cheaper irons.  I have medium, thick hair and I find that this iron works well with my hair texture.  I get lazy in the mornings so I curl a larger section than recommended at a time yet my curls still come out great and hold for the entire day.  Since the heat is distributed so evenly, you won’t have to worry about any parts of your hair gettig less curled than the rest.

2. SHU UEMURA Moisture Foundation:  I use this to prep my hair before using the iron.  I won’t curl my hair without using this product because it really keeps the strands and the look smooth while providing just enough weight that I won’t have that awkward volume from bending the hair at the roots.  The product delivers moisture and light conditioning and protects the shaft from the excessive heat.  Sometimes I feel like the iron burns off some of the product, so I make sure to spritz again after curling as well.

3. DAVINES Oil Non Oil for Wizards:  When I take a shower in the evening and want curly hair the next day, I often choose to sleep with my  hair wrapped up in rags or buns to avoid having to style in the morning.  The look is different- it’s more messy and beachy than smooth and romantic.  Since I won’t be using heat, I have to make sure that the product I use can work extra duty.  I work a quarter sized amount of Finest Oil Non Oil for Wizards into my  damp hair before wrapping it at night.  This product adds shine, texture and moisture to hair and does a great job of holding the shape.  Contrary to the name, this product is not oily at all.  However, if you wish to create the wet look, just work more of this product into your hair for extra gloss.

4. SHU UEMURA Liquid Fabric Mineral Texture Spray: Truth is, I’m not always the biggest fan of sea salt sprays because they leave my hair all dry and tangeled and I never quite achieve the same free flowing curls I do after an actual day at the beach. I love the Shu Liquid Fabric because it gives the same piecy look minus the drying and tangling salt. It gives great texture and helps hold the waves in for the entire day.  I always spray this on after I blow out my curls (from the overnight buns technique) to give my waves a new oomph.

5. TASSI: Tassi is the best thing I have for maintaining a round brush salon blowout.  It keeps your hair out of the way while you’re washing your face so you won’t accidently get your profesionally done curls wet.  It also won’t flatten your hair unlike if you use a regular headband.  But best of all, Tassi is perfect for holding in your curls while you sleep.  Simply take your hair, roll it into one huge bun and wrap it with Tassi.  The size of the product makes it easy to cover all your hair and the soft terry makes it very comfortable to sleep in (bye bye bobby pins!)
