H&M Commes des Garcons Collection

What separates this hum drum Thursday from any other normal day?  Apart from being merely one day to the weekend (thank goodness!), today is also the day that H&M’s collaboration with Japanese brand, Commes des Garcons, drops into stores!

That’s right, start running and lining outside the few select H&M stores that will be carrying this capsule collection designed by  Commes des Garcons designer and founder, Rei Kawakubo.  This collection debuted earlier in Japan on November 8th and already caused a frenzy, with people waiting up to 12 and 14 hours merely to get a chance to buy the collection. (See the video here.)

Not exactly a household name stateside, Commes des Garcons (French for “Like Boys”), is an avant-garde fashion label, featuring elaborately constructed and often architectural designs that are frequently thought as being wearable art.  I was excited to see how the brand’s sometimes outlandish and revolutionary designs would be translated for the varied and diverse H&M audience, and based upon this preview picture, I can say that all of the designs look wearable and beautiful with a mix of feminine and masculine details.  In particular, I like the new Victorian inspiration of the ruffled dress noted above, and the black polka dot blouse in the above picture was already spotted on Katie Holmes earlier this month!

As a word of warning, I’ve read on some sites featuring news about this collection that some of the price points for this collection as slightly higher than many people are used to seeing at H&M, including some whispers of a $350 dress!  But as most Commes des Garcons designs have price points of $1,000 and up, it still gives you the capability to have a dose of avant-garde Japanese fashion at just a fraction of the price.
