Insider’s Obsessions: Matt Bernson
Matt Bernson is a fantastic shoe designer and his company story is quite amazing. While working in his family’s construction business, Bernson discovered a pair of ornately decorated sandals during a trip to India, which inspired his career as an shoe designer. With his entrepreneurial spirit, Matt created custom hardware and special leathers, including the flexible and durable “Luxeflex Leather Sole” – unique only to Matt Bernson shoes. Each shoe is hand cut and sewn; lasted uppers are adorned with metallic piping, complex hardware and exotic touches, while the vegetable dyed hand-waxed insoles are detailed with leather stitching and rivet details. The results are beautifully constructed, comfortable shoes that have fans in women like Sarah Jessica Parker, Gemma Ward, Cindy Crawford…and us! This month, Matt took the time to tell us about his latest obsessions, so make sure to check them out!
ONE. Matt Bernson Talaria Sandal – With gladiator sandals ruling the world right now, I wanted to come up with something that had a little bit of uniqueness and character. The Talaria has a true character of its own, it is Greek Mythology personified in a sandal.
TWO. Chateau de la Chevre D’Or in Eze, France – This hotel is unbelievably serene and beautiful, and is a part of my favorite place in the world…not to mention the absolute best chicken club sandwich ever. My wife and I were married in France and it will always be dear to our hearts.
THREE. Glass and Steel Vitrines — I am in the process of transforming my Tribeca studio and am having Vitrines like these custom-made. Their industrial and raw, yet clean feel will be the perfect way to display my shoes while portraying the Matt Bernson “downtown meets the beach” ideal.
FOUR. Porter Boston Mens Tote — I found this in Tokyo and loved the rugged but simple feel and practicality of it. No matter what mood I’m in or what I’m wearing, it seems to be a great accompaniment.
FIVE. After Dark by Huraki Murakami — This is my current read and has proven a great choice. The quirky mental landscapes provided take me to another place when my my mind really needs a break from the everyday stresses of my life.

I love his shoes! They are the most comfortable and are just a magnet for compliments. Unfortunately I couldn’t get to the Sample Sale this weekend but please keep doing what you’re doing!! My feet have never been happier…
i went to his sample sale last week, i got lost but i don’t regret it, his sandals are amazing! not all of them suit my feet but they’re all so gorgeous! he was really nice and helpful while i was looking around and trying some on :D
