One of the things that I love the most about Benefit (besides their great products) is that they have a sense of humor about makeup. Their products all have fun names and come packaged in whimsical, funky boxes that just make you smile when you look at them. Their holiday collection for this season is no exception.
Peace, love & glossiness (cutest name ever for a lip gloss set!) is a gift that comes complete with three double-sided glosses, so you get a total of six different shades for $26. The shades range from Kiss You, a purplish-pink to 24k, a sparkling gold, and they’re all flattering, wearable colors, so this isn’t one of those sets that you buy because you love one color and get stuck with the rest. You get plenty of gloss in each tube and I love that the colors on each wand compliment each other (there’s a darker shade on one end and a lighter shade on the other). They’re the perfect combo to take your lips from day to night! (more…)

Don’t worry…we’ve already scouted six fabulous choices under $25 that will be sure to please the recipient!
ONE. Jill Bliss Flower Mini Journal Set — Know a friend who makes a New Year’s resolution every year to start writing in a journal? Make it easier for her this year to achieve this goal by gifting her this set of blank notebook by Jill Bliss ($15.95). The handcrafted design of these notebooks is so beautiful – very 60’s and reminiscent of Sofia Coppola’s Virgin Suicides – that she’ll feel compelled to carry these around all the time to jot down her best ideas. Its perfect pocket size also won’t take up any extra room in her bag, and the blank pages are the ideal blank canvas for any recessionista with an artsy or writer type friend. - joie (more…)
When it comes to your intimates, you should look to visit your collection every season to see what items are tired and need to be replaced. This season, I’m in search of a t-shirt bra and Calvin Klein has a fantastic option. I’ve always been a fan of Calvin Klein intimates for their affordability and comfort, but the t-shirt bra from their Seductive Comfort line is also sleek and sexy, too! The Seductive Comfort line “specifically addresses a new audience with enhanced fit and comfort attributes with a special focus on C through DD cup sizes.” The bra is created in a smooth, contoured shape with a hidden elastic and cushioning for comfort. I can attest that it’s totally seamless under t-shirts (and dresses, blouses, etc.) and is so comfortable that you can wear it for 12+ hours with ease. It also makes you feel lifted and supported, but the satin-y texture of the actual item is so gorgeous and makes you feel ultra sexy.
Simply walking into Amalia Restaurant in New York City is an experience in itself. It’s a bit like walking into your college art history books. The restaurant-lounge is categorized into eight different rooms but the theme of opulent colors, rich textures, and Baroque influence runs throughout. Owner Greg Brier named this restaurant after Sigmund Freud’s mother, Amalia, and thus brought to life his interpretation of her world.
Last month I had the opportunity to stop by the restaurant again because they had a massive menu overhaul and I had to go experience their new offerings. Amalia describes their cuisine as American Nouveau with Mediterranean flair and certainly menu options range for “Angus short ribs” to “Mediterranean sea bass” and “olive spreads.” The menu is fundametally American but influenced by a variety of flavors ranging from Moroccan to Italian. I participated in a tasting menu so I was lucky enough to sample a variety of their new dishes. And they were delicious! My favorites among the appetizers were the lamb meatballs, made unique by a touch of mint, and the diver scallops in black truffle vinaigrette. I can’t ever say no to truffles! (more…)
Last year, I wrote about how much I adore India Hicks Island Living Collection…and I’m about to profess love for the new Island Nights Collection now. Currently, I have the fabulous Scented Candle and Fragrance Diffuser – both of which are truly exquisite products.
Both are beautifully boxed – so much so that I almost didn’t want to open them up. The product design itself is even more impressive. With a burn time of 50 hours, the candle features gorgeous indigo glass, set in a coral silver holder. The diffuser is a stunner that you will want to keep on display. The indigo glass is etched with the coral print; the wicking twigs are done in black, intended to “echo the limbs of a favorite tree – a hurricane survivor that clings to the shallows.” Either would make a fantastic hostess gift, but you might not be able to part with it after seeing how lovely they are!
The scent is a blend of purple and white orchids, night-blooming jasmine, green island palms and orange blossom nectar. Underneath all the flora is a note of musk, which gives it a sexy depth and earthiness. I’m burning the candle on my desk during the day right now…and it’s truly lovely. The diffuser is sitting in my living room, looking quite pretty. Both scent the entire room, and the fragrance really is a mellow scent – keeping you relaxed even on the most hectic of days.
Back in the day, I remember searching the internet for a lash thickening treatment. There was just one back then, which I used and then later heard it got recalled. Oops – my poor eyes/lashes! Luckily, now there are many good options on the market and you can try out what works best for you. I’ve discovered DermaQuest’s DermaLash. It works fab as an eyelash treatment and conditioner – and made my lashes fuller and thicker in just weeks.
DermaLash goes even further than the average lash treatment on the market; it also doubles as an eyeliner so you can get your treatment in in the AM and the PM! You know how much I love a multitasker! DermaLash Colors comes in plum, black, cocoa and indigo. The brush is stiff enough that putting it on (and not making a mess) is a cinch. Plus, I love that this forces me to put my liquid liner on properly, which is on the lash line. Double duty! Plus, their colors come from natural minerals so you know you’re not putting anything dangerous close to your eye. Check it out for yourself at DermaQuest.com.
Pacifica has a number of gift sets that will delight any lucky gift recipient this season, and I think I’ve come across the best one in terms of price and product. Pacifica Smart Sets are made up of travel-sized versions of their best products in a cute gift box, and only for $16! A Smart Set will contain a 3 oz. soy candle, body butter, and solid perfume. It even has a matching box of matches! The packaging is so cute and perfect as a gift. The scents available are:
- Tuscan Blood Orange: rich, sweet citrus
- Hawaiian Ruby Guava: warm, berry/citrus scent
- Mediterranean Fig: pictured right, and my favorite, a sensual, earthy sandalwood scent

With these choices, you’re bound to please with either a woodsy floral or fruit scent. And for only $16, it’s an affordable and adorable gift! Check everything out at pacificacandles.com – you can shop online, or locate stores near you. It’ll definitely be a challenge not to shop for a little something for yourself while you’re hunting for these gift sets!
Still stressed on what you’ll be contributing to your family get-together or Thanksgiving dinner? Well, look no further. The lovely ladies of The Little Black Apron: A Single Girl’s Guide to Cooking with Style and Grace have come up with yet another fun, healthy recipe for you to whip up in your kitchen. Regardless of your skill level, the authors have created easy recipes in their book with explanations for every culinary step along the way. Last month, Jodi Citrin, Melissa Gibson, and Katie Nuanes shared their recipe for a Gingersnap & Pumpkin Parfait with us for a yummy seasonal treat.
For Thanksgiving, they’re sharing their recipe for Whole Wheat Herb Stuffing with Apples. It’s a tasty stuffing that you and your family and friends will all enjoy. (more…)
As much as I love all the CLEAN fragrances, once the weather turns colder, my tastes change and I want a slightly stronger, warmer scent. And with the introduction of the new CLEAN Winter, that’s exactly what they’ve created. Like all of their fragrances, it smells fresh and crisp with a hint of soap, but the Winter scent has a slightly spicy kick to it that makes it different from all of their previous scents. With notes of Crisp Bergamot, Soft Iris, White Jasmine, Fresh Mint Leaves and Frosty Hyacinth, it’s meant to mimic the feeling of stepping outside on a snowy afternoon and that’s really the perfect description of this scent. It’s a perfume that I would wear to go walking around Manhattan during December, when the air is thick with winter and you can just smell the snow about to fall. I’ll definitely be adding it to my rotation of CLEAN scents and using it to get me through the (admittedly) mild L.A. winter.
The CLEAN Winter Eau de Parfum and Whipped Body Cream Set is available now as an HSN exclusive (the body cream is an added bonus – you can layer on the scent for even more Winter goodness!) The set retails for $59.95.
We’ve written before about how much we adore Whish for their amazing shaving products for women. Whish really has elevated the shaving experience beyond just soap and water, and now they have a full line to fully complete a luxurious bath experience. The Three Whishes products include a body wash, sugar scrub, and body butter in 3 different scents (pomegranate, lemon grass, almond). I tried the Three Whishes products in the pomegranate scent and really loved them all! Let’s look at the Three Whishes one at a time:
- Body Wash: doesn’t dry out your skin, and washes away gently. It’s packed with organic shea butter, raspberry butter, and aloe, and the pomegranate scent is heavenly.
- Sugar Scrub: exfoliates using organic sugar, raspberry seeds, and bamboo powder.
- Body Butter: my favorite! An unbelievably creamy lotion that is so moisturizing and perfect to slather on after you’re done with the bath products. The pomegranate scent is the perfect balance of sweet and tart and lingers on your skin softly.
