I’ve always wanted to visit BED after I saw it featured on Sex and the City, but sadly the New York hot spot closed after an accident involving some of its patrons more than a year ago. Though I never made it to the original establishment that aired on the show, I did make a point to check out its sister, the recently renovated BED Miami, which I was pleased to discover is alive and well.
BED stands for “Beverages. Entertainment. Dinner.” and my friends and I decided to stop by for a bit of each. Everything – the beverages, entertainment and dinner – are served on oversize beds that line a huge warehouse-y space in South Beach. The restaurant, which doubles as a late night hot spot, exudes that club vibe from the moment you walk past the velvet ropes. (It was the first time I’ve had a bouncer check me in for dinner.) We were led to a huge bed, complete with mesh curtains for privacy and an abundance of pillows, that seats at least six to eight. My two friends and I had so much room we were practically eating dinner lying down. A huge wooden tray serves as the dining table, and each person is given a large circular place mat to eat from.
BED serves international eclectic tapas created by executive chef Freddy Vega, and I picked up a lot of South American influence in his dishes. Orders come in small plates to share, and the wait staff brings everything from fishes to steaks to your exclusive sack. My favorite of the evening is a Peruvian dish called lomo saltado. This Chifa dish mixes Asian flavors into a local entree of sirloin strips, onions, tomatoes, rice and french fries. Sounds a bit odd perhaps, but I assure you is delicious. After eating the dish cooked by local chefs in Peru, I vouch that Vega’s version is just as authentic.
The sexy ambiance (what else would you expect from a place called BED?) is both romantic and trendy, making it an appropriate venue for couples or girlfriends alike. After dinner, the space opens up into an exclusive club where diners can mingle with the hottest crowd in South Beach and dance (or sleep) the night away. Cocktail dresses are preferred to pajamas.
BED is located at 929 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33139. Call (305) 532-9070 for more info.
