Beauty, New York, Spas & SalonsRecession Friendly Facial

Even in the depth of economic dispair, a trip to Bergdorf Goodman provides reprieve from the winter blues. It may seem ironic that I list this legendary luxury store as recession friendly (and I don’t mean “just look and don’t buy”), but located on the beauty level is the Elemis SpaPod where you can get a facial, a massage and an eyebrow wax for $55.  Say again?

Elemis is one of my favorite lines of skincare and in New York, it is exclusively carried at Bergdorf. Behind the counter is the SpaPod is a small room where the Elemis aestheticians performs facials using a range of Elemis consumer and spa-only products.  I stopped by after work yesterday evening for a 30 minute Power Boost Facial and was impressed with the convenience and quality of their services.

The facial starts with an electronic examination of your skin in the Visia Complexion Analysis Machine, which quickly measures sun damage, dry skin, oiliness, bacteria, pore size and wrinkles.  Armed with this knowledge of your skin, the aesthetician can quickly prescribe the correct Elemis product to suit your condition. For example, it turns out that I’ve been using the wrong Elemis mask at home, but now I’ve been corrected.

The 30 minute Power Boost facial does not include steaming or extractions, which was fine with me as those are the most stressful parts anyway.  It does include a thorough cleanse, tone, exfoliation, a custom mask, massage, and complete moisturizing. The products used differ on everyone, as they are fully customized based on your skin’s Visia analysis.  However, I think that all Elemis products, when appropraite for your skin, deliver amazing results. My skin was absolutely glowing after the short facial.

Another highlight of the experience is the intellight massage chair, which gives you a full body massage for the duration of your facial.  Unlike other massage chairs that simply vibrate, this chair gauges your spine position and body weight to provide a customised accupressure massage.  You leave feeling completely refreshed and rejuvenated. (I would like to be on the list to get one of those chairs please!)

From now until Christmas, Elemis is offering a complimentary waxing/tweezing service with the purchase of any facial. That means you get a massage, a quality facial and eyebrow grooming for $55 – and that my friends, is an amount I can stand behind – even in a recession.  Who knew a trip to Bergdorf could be so easy on the wallet?

For those of you who don’t live in New York, Elemis also has Spa Pods at select Nordstroms aorund the country. Complete list at
