Hair, Miami, Spas & SalonsA Cut Above

TDO Editor Kathleen enjoyed the new Culter on New York’s 57th St. so much that I decided I had to experience the Miami outpost myself when I was down there last month for vacation.  Luckily for me, Culter Miami is located in the same building as the Gansevoort South where I was staying, and my Girl’s Getaway package included two free blowouts!  Since I was there for the weekend, that meant one blow out per day!

On Saturday, I walked in after a day of shopping and before dinner to get a round brush blowout and was greeted by some of the friendliest staff I’ve ever encountered in a salon.   I was helped right away by Heather and experienced a very enjoyable blowout.  Unlike some stylists in New York, there was no pretentiousness whatsoever, and I spent an enjoyable hour getting my hair done and talking about boys. I felt like I was back in high school (in a good way) and getting my hair done by my best friend – except Heather  actually knew what she was doing.  At the end of the service, she  gave me her email and MySpace account; how often does that happen within an hour of meeting a stranger?

On Sunday, I rolled in around the same time hoping to see Heather again, but it was her day off so I entrusted myself into the knowledgeable hands of Ryan, who did one of the prettiest round brush blowouts I’ve ever gotten anywhere!  He was also incredibly friendly chatting me up on all the cool places to visit in Miami and sharing stories of New Year’s past.  It’s easy to tell that Ryan is artistic and quite talented with hair.  I was speaking to him about needing to get a haircut and loved his vision of my favorite hair.  I was ready to head into the salon for a third time to get him to cut my hair the next day, but alas, didn’t have time before my flight.

The other day (back in New York), I had one of those snotty hair experiences where the stylist insulted my cut, color and hair in general within two minutes of sitting in his chair. And the whole time I was getting my hair blown out (after a condescending “We’ll see what we can do.”). I couldn’t stop thinking about the friendly service and fun times I had at Cutler Miami.  My hair came out looking fine, but I was rather insulted by the service.  After all, getting your hair done is supposed to be a positive, enjoyable and ego-boosting event, which is something the stylists and staff at Cutler Miami really understand.

Culter is located in the Hotel Gansevoort on 2377 Collins Ave, Miami Beach. Call (305) 672-4499 for an appointment.

I *love* my Cutler products – esp the Protectant Spray. It smells so good and makes my hair so soft when I blow dry, and the Straightening Cream is great, too. It’s the closest thing I can come to one of the salon’s being all the way out here in middle America. Hopefully you took some of his products home with you, too.

Oh my gosh – I do! I have two of them, actually. I keep one in my desk and the other at the house. (I actually got them on ebay for dirt cheap.) Love them – this Oklahoma wind makes them indispensible!
