New York Fashion Week AW09: Rebecca Taylor

Having walked into the Rebecca Taylor AW09 show without having done my homework and without a description of the inspiration for the season included in the program notes, I was at a bit of a loss.  At first, I thought she was in a feminine jungle mood or jungle-lite, after I saw a few pairs of muted gray leopard and giraffe print pants prance down the runway, as well as some faux-fur shrugs – I thought to myself that I will not be buying such things come Fall 2009.

But I breathed a sigh of relief as pieces with the familiar Rebecca Taylor girly, sweet aesthetic began to come out – dresses and blouses with ruffle detailing (she’s never met a ruffle she hasn’t liked) and floral dresses. It turns out that the inspiration behind Rebecca’s Fall 2009 show was “Nordic Fairytales,” and this was evident in the addition of Icelandic-inspired knitwear added to the collection. A cozy Fair Isle cardigan was the perfect dressed down complement to a luxurious black bejeweled top and slouchy gray trousers, as well as a silk rosette top and duchesse satin tulip skirt.

Bright, almost neon floral dresses and cardigans in chilly colors were styled by being cinched with brown leather utilitarian style belts. The silhouttes for each outfit didn’t vary much from one outfit to the other, but I felt that this only highlighted their versatility and ability to be mixed and matched as they were repeated throughout the collection. Colors ranged from from soft pinks to bright magentas, soft charcoals, to some solid blacks, but most were in the familiar muted color palette we are used to seeing from Rebecca Taylor.
