Not even the non-presence of rumored attendee Michelle Obama could put a damper on my excitement for The Heart Truth’s Red Dress Collection, which showed just in time for Valentine’s Day. I was excited to officially kick off Fashion Week by attending The Heart Truth’s Red Dress show, which combines three of the elements in a truly awesome fashion show: celebrities, beautiful clothes and a fantastic cause. All of these elements were there in full force at the show today at Bryant Park with celebrities ranging from Amanda Bynes, Nastia Liukin, and Katie Couric (who debuted a new, cute page boy cut), to some red dress stunners by designers such as Marchesa, Carolina Herrera, and Max Azria.
The Heart Truth campaign is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and was created to educate women about the importance of heart health. Did you know that Heart Disease is the number one killer of women? I definitely didn’t until I was enlightened by Tim Gunn, the host of the Red Dress event, who started off the show adorably for sounding a little under the weather, and then ended by offering the show as a Valentine to his audience. Carolyn (aka perfumed) already wrote a great post to remind us not to neglect one of the most valuable organs on our bodies and to remind others to do the same so that all your friends and family remain happy and healthy.
A full lineup of celebrities were sitting both front row and stalking the runway to support this worthy cause. I spotted Christian Siriano of Project Runway fame front row, as well as Miss J of America’s Next Top Model chatting cozily with Hilary Alexander of The Daily Telegraph. Amanda Bynes, wearing Swarovski, was the first to walk with a red mini that was definitely on the short side; it was clear from her walk that she was a little uncomfortable with the shortness of the dress, but she didn’t have to worry — her legs looked fab! Beverly Hills 90210 alum Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling walked next, with Jennie Garth in an elegant Badgley Mischka and Tori in a tiered fluffy red and black lace confection designed by Betsey Johnson. From her jaunty walk, you could see that Tori was clearly loving the dress and the runway.
Vivica A. Fox glided down the runway in true diva style with a beaded, slinky Jenny Packham number, and Lynda Carter sauntered down the runway in a dramatic Carolina Herrera gown to the tune of Chicago’s “When You’re Good to Mama,” giving Queen Latifah’s version in the movie some competition. The best dresses of the show were worn by Samantha Harris with an elegant and flowing one shoulder David Meister dress, which fit her like a charm, and Nastia Liukin, who wore a breezy, knee length black and red accented wrap dress by Maz Azria (who selected Nastia as the spring face for his campaign).
