Not Your Daddy’s Steakhouse

STK, located in the heart of New York City’s Meatpacking district, was clearly founded on the Jessica Simpson quote that “Real Women Eat Meat.” Although it is geared towards women, it’s not decorated in typical “boy’s club” fashion with hardwood and exposed brick, but lest you think that “feminine décor” means pink and frilly, be assured that this is also a steakhouse that you can take a boy to: STK instead features a sleek, dark minimalist décor that instantly screams chic—one would expect no less from the founders of Tenjune, which also houses STK.
Carolyn and I had the opportunity to dine at STK to sample its unique gourmet steakhouse menu, and were excited to see that the menu featured steakhouse classics, with a twist, such as Lil Big Macs (mini size Japanese Wagyu beef sliders with special sauce in a sesame seed bun) and Shrimp Rice Krispies (tiger prawns in a shrimp bisque, finished with cilantro.)
As with any proper meal, we started our night off with cocktails. Carolyn tried the White Orchid, which was a Ketel Citroen Cosmo with Canton, white cranberry juice, and candied ginger, which she deemed to be refreshing and delicious. With my renowned sweet tooth, I chose the Strawberry Rhubarb Cobbler, with rhubarb infused vodka, muddled fresh strawberries, with a graham cracker crusted rim. We selected the foie gras French toast, which featured seared pieces of foie gras in a green apple sauce, with pieces of toasted almond brioche, in a sherry gastrique. The almond brioche and foie gras were a perfect blend of sweet and savory, and the foie gras was seared to the perfect degree to be velvety smooth.
For noshing in between the appetizer and the main course, the server delivered oven fresh, homemade bread with a flavorful garlicky green pesto sauce. For the main course, Carolyn opted for the sirloin, which was a generous 16 ounce cut of meat that was melt in your mouth. STK features a number of different sauces to accompany your steak including salsa verde, blue butter, fresh horseradish, au poivre, red wine, bold STK, and their signature sauce. Carolyn chose the signature sauce, which was a custom blend of some traditional steak sauce, with Sriracha, which was a flavorful twist in normal A1 sauce.
To be different, I chose the fish of the day, which was a white fish with a fragrant coconut curry sauce, with assorted vegetables. The fish was flaky and fresh, and the sauce was a nice Pan-Asian take the traditional Thai flavored sauce. My favorite part of going to a steakhouse is always the sides, and the two that we had were my most delicious part of the night. We had a macaroni and cheese, which was flavored with 4 different varieties of cheeses, and truffle fries, which were stacked like Lincoln logs, in a mini tower. The truffles fries, were cooked to perfection and delivered a satisfying crunch to give way to a soft, starchy inside when we bit into them. The macaroni and cheese had a slightly crunchy topping, and the noodles were cooked to a perfect al dente.
Although we were both really full, we knew that we couldn’t skimp on dessert, so we had the tres leche cake, with a modern take on the Mexican classic. Featuring 3 different types of milk and a creamy coconut ice cream, the cake was dense, moist and rich and the perfect end to a great dinner.
