Berlin Comes to NYC

I was inspired by my friends over at the Jet Set Girls to set annual travel resolutions in the same style that they do. To start, I resolved to hit up more places that begin with the letter ‘A’ in 2009, but since I was just invited on a last minute trip to Barbados, decided to go for the ‘B’s’ instead. I’m excited to leave for the island on April 1, but also sad that I’m missing the few days that another ‘B’ place I’ve been dying to visit - Berlin - comes to New York City.
To kick-off a global celebration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and mark two decades of change and creativity, the city of Berlin will bring its top fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians and artists to New York. From March 31- April 2, New York will be the first global city to host the “Be Berlin” campaign and “20 Years of Change: Berlin Days in New York City.”
Two events open to the public are:
“Bricks to Berlin” (Tuesday, March 31 at The New Museum)
Open to the public on Tuesday, March 31 from 10 am to 5 pm, “Bricks to Berlin” is an interactive exhibit of artist-designed brick forms to be signed by the New York creative community, famous personalities and the public with messages of hope, unity and freedom. From New York, the exhibit will travel worldwide, stopping in other global cities before concluding in Berlin. More than 1,000 bricks with messages and artwork from around the world will be assembled at Brandenburg Gate in Berlin to recreate the historic Berlin Wall. The bricks will then symbolically be torn down in a one-of-a-kind reenactment at the center of planned ceremonies on November 9, 2009 to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall.
“Berlin: The Place to be for Clubbing“ (Thursday, April 2 at APT Club)
The “be Berlin” public events in New York City will also feature a “Berlin Nightlife” event at APT Club (419 West 13th Street) on Thursday, April 2. Starting at 10:00 p.m., the free event will feature music by Super DJ Dmitri, former member of Deee-Lite; special Berlin-specific cocktails; and a Berlin-related media presentation.
I’m sad that I’m out of New York City during these events but hope a Berlin trip is sometime in my near future. Let me know if you attend any of those events as it looks like it should be a great time!
