Locanda Portofino

Locanda Portofino is a romantic Italian restaurant located on the gorgeous street that is Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, one of my favorite neighborhoods. I’ve actually walked by the restaurant many times and have heard many wonderful things about the food; so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to finally try it out a couple weeks ago.
That evening, my first impressions were that this charming restaurant was quite busy (always a good sign in these economic times). Though there was a main dining room and outside patio area, we were seated in the smaller room to the side that housed a gorgeous rustic wine room. I was happy to find a delightful cozy atmosphere, complete with wicker chairs that seemed somehow chic and comfortable at the same time. Our drink orders were quickly taken and just as quickly, brought to our table.
We started with an eggplant appetizer, layered with mozzarella and this amazingly sweet tomato sauce. It was a great way to kick off the meal, as it was a good representation of what this restaurant is all about. My significant other ordered one of the specials, the Spigola dish (a European sea bass) that was paired with fresh vegetables. He said that it was filling, yet light – and was cooked to perfection.
While we asked for some recommendations, I had pretty much made up my mind before arriving as I was tipped off to the Penna Vodka, one of their most popular dishes. This amazing Penna Vodka was made with a light cream tomato sauce, vodka and shallots. Sounds typical, right? I assure you, it’s not. It’s truly the most amazing Penne Vodka I’ve had to date. The taste was unique, yet will instantly making you feel at home. It was comforting, filling and truly a treat for my taste buds. At $16, I thought it was a good value, too. Seriously, I could eat this at least three days a week (if I didn’t have to worry about my waistline)!
Though the restaurant was bustling all evening long, never once did I feel like our table was neglected – and because of the intimate space, I could clearly see that other diners were also being treated the same by the charming wait staff. (We swear…they all have Italian accents.) In fact, our primary waiter, Andre, was one of the best that I’ve come across in a long time. I definitely will be going there again – if only for the Penne Vodka.
Overall, the cuisine just felt authentically Italian yet unpretentious. I think this is a cozy, rustic spot for a romantic dinner or even a great place for a intimate lunch with friends. Plus, you never know who you might see there! (Anthony Hopkins was there on the night we were.) Locanda Portofino is located at 1110 Montana Ave. in Santa Monica.
