ONE Sunset

Recently, I was invited to dine at ONE Sunset on the Sunset Strip and after hearing a rave from our New York editors about the One Group sister venue, STK, I was super excited to go and try this restaurant out. I went on the night of their Tuesday Tastings, where Chef Jason Marcus puts together a “One of Almost Everything” menu that is composed of five courses – for a mere $45. For a dollar more, you can get a bottle of wine to share between two people. All I could think was…what a deal!

Located on the Sunset Strip (blocks away from the famed Hollywood locales like the Viper Room), ONE Sunset is everything you think it would be. As you walk in through the big double doors, you’ll immediately note that the decor is chic and swanky – from the glossy black interior to the tall vases with white orchids floating in water. The lighting is dim and sexy, but there’s strategically placed uplighting where you actually need to see (like where you’re eating). Similarly, the entire venue utilizes lounge furniture for the most part. (It turns into a club later at night.) There is a bar area off to the right side of the restaurant, while the left side sits those who want to dine. In the back, there’s the Candle Rooms, which are more private lounge areas. We sat in the dining area, along the left side of the room which has one long loungy couch, a small table in front and a chair opposite; so you are seated quite closely next to your fellow diners. There is more seating in the middle that is a bit more private if you prefer that.

ONE Sunset’s menu is a mix of flavors, but the best way to describe it is New American – though it does have exotic undertones that take you around the globe. The menu is tapas, which is really fun and perfect for sharing. Like I mentioned before, the restaurant offered a the tasting menu on the night I visited, so that’s what I went for. For two, that means there are a total of ten dishes for $90. On average, that means each dish was $9, which I think is a steal for this type of LA dining. On this night, our tasting menu consisted of:
- Spicy Tuna Tartare
- Adult Candy
- Burrata and Strawberries
- BBQ Short Rib Sliders
- Korean Chicken Satay
- Chestnut Tortellini
- Turkey Meatballs
- Roasted Clams on the Half Shell
- Velvet Rope Cupcakes
- Molten Lava Cake (off the menu)
Each and every one of these dishes was memorable for me. My favorite dish that I can’t stop talking about is the Adult Candy, which were lollipops of bacon-wrapped, blue cheese-stuffed dates. It struck the balance of savory and sweet perfectly. They’re so delectable that I can’t stop thinking about them – even almost a week later! I also liked the Spicy Tuna Tartare; it was served on tempura eggplant, which gave it an interesting contrast in textures. My significant other loved the BBQ Short Rib Sliders, which were amazingly sweet and tender, served with onion rings. The Burrata and Strawberries was possibly the most surprising dish of all. You spread the burrata on cinnamon bruschetta and top it with micro strawberries, micro basil and pistachios. I could honestly rave about every single one of those dishes. By the end, we were so stuffed that we could’ve been carried out the restaurant. If you go, I highly recommend the tasting menu, as it is truly extensive and is a great way to get a true feel for the ONE Sunset menu.
Before I end this review, I must mention the impeccable service. The wait staff consistently filled our glasses, never missed a beat when asked about the specifics of the dishes, and the service turnover was quick. We received our food fairly promptly all night, and our server was nice and informative, without being pushy or overbearing. In short, it was exactly what I always want anytime I go out to eat. Overall, my dining experience to ONE Sunset was fabulous and I can’t wait to go back!
