Accessories, FashionEditor’s Closet: May 2009

ONE. Chanel J12 White Ceramic watch – Okay – so confession, I didn’t buy the Chanel J12 White Ceramic watch, although I wanted to.  This watch has been on my personal Lust List forever!  However, I just can’t justify the price for the watch (nor do I have a spare multiples of $1000+ laying around unused), especially since the band isn’t even made out of any precious materials.  But I still come back to this watch everytime because I love the look of the white ceramic for its cleanness and purity. Even though I also typically stick to more feminine clothing, I also really like the look of a typically “man’s watch” on a woman.  So, instead of splurging for the J12, I instead bought a cheap, small rectangular faced watch off the streets of Asia, in white “ceramic” (I am pretty certain it is plastic, but it looks like ceramic, so that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.)  Surprisingly, I have already received lots of admirers about my watch in spite of its no-name brand and although it’s no Chanel J12, it’s a nice stylish substitute.

TWO. Victoria’s Secret Adjustable Triangle Top & Double-String Bottom — All my bathing suits I’ve bought in years past have been only good for sunbathing and not any kind of strenuous water activity.  I hate bathing suit bottoms that cut into my circulation and tops that I feel like could slip off precariously at any time.  This Victoria’s Secret suit is the optimal mix of style and function.  The bikini top is slightly cinched in the front which doesn’t make the neckline too plunging, and the double set of adjustable ties on the bottom allow them to be flexible, yet sturdy.  I haven’t tested out this suit in the water quite yet, but hope to test it out next week on my trip to the Bahamas!

THREE. Elijah Dress — I purchased this dress by Elijah at the Barneys Warehouse Sale a few months ago and while foraging through my closet for something to wear last minute, found it all the way in the back.  While flower pins are usually very Carrie Bradshaw circa 1999, the flower pin that comes with the dress isn’t too ostentatious and sets off the asymmetrical neckline.  The asymmetrical neckline is my favorite part of the dress because it is not too revealing and is subtly sexy, reveling a bit of your shoulders but not your entire chest area.  The dress is made out of a blend of stretch and cotton, which makes it extremely comfortable and I wear mine belted at the waist with peep toe heels for a look that is slightly slinky.

FOUR. Barbara Hulanicki for Topshop Scarf with Girl Print – I finally went to check out Topshop last week and fell in love with this white bohemian scarf from the Barbara Hulanicki capsule collection for Topshop.  Barbara Hulanicki is the original founder of the legendary store, Biba, where rockstars such as Marianne Faithful and Mick Jagger, used to frequent.  Reminiscent of the easy flowing Biba style, I love the  white chiffon of this scarf, along with the romantic girly print.  I picture pairing this with a white flowy top, a pair of cute denim cutoffs, and some metallic sandals.

FIVE. Foley + Corinna Mid City Tote — My friend and I call this Foley + Corinna bag the Mary Poppins bag, because it is so versatile, in being both shrinkable and expandable. When you want it to be small, you can fold it in half, or carry it by the handles when you want it to be bigger. I can fit a change of shoes in here, along a small change of clothes, and reading material from work. You can also carry this bag in a variety of ways, slung over the shoulder, held by the handles, or crosswise against your chest. Foley and Corinna comes out with this bag in a multitude of colors every year and I scored mine at an end of season sale on Shopbop. I love the glossy eggplant color of this bag, which is dark enough to make it a staple, but is still special enough to stand out. Although there is no zipper closure for the main opening of the bag, there are 2 zippered pockets on the outside, which are ideal for separating your keys and your current lip gloss favorite, as well as a zippered pocket on the inside to hold your valuables. It is truly one of the most functional purchases I have ever made.
