It’s Amateur Wine Night @ Corkbar

WHO: Partners Caleb Wines, John McGonigle, Garry Muir, Chris Schiffman, Craig Hoffman; Executive Chef Albert Aviles
WHAT: Corkbar
WHERE: 403 W. 12th St. in downtown Los Angeles
WHEN: Daily 11:30AM-2 AMish
WHY: Fancy yourself a wine connoisseur? I don’t. But Corkbar, a casual yet hip wine bar in downtown L.A.’s South Park neighborhood, sure has me excited about becoming one.
Located at the base of the EVO lofts, the fittingly loft-like space is decorated with unfinished wood, wine bottles and corks – an homage to both L.A. and Napa Valley. Started by five wine-loving, non-wine experts, Corkbar prides itself on being unpretentious about wine tasting despite its ever-changing, 18-page wine list. On the menu, you’ll find approximately 65 artisanal California wines by the glass and 100 such wines by the bottle, along with a variety of regional microbrews and a farmer’s market-driven lunch and dinner menu. Should you feel you are drowning in options, you can rely on the menu’s suggested wine pairings and a glossary of wine terms, or ask a friendly staff member for a free tasting of any wine. (Tip: You can even purchase your final selection from the restaurant at half the market price should you wish to take it home!)
As for the food, I went in with high expectations and still left blown away: At half-priced happy hour (weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m.), the White Bean Purée appetizer (regularly $4) was divinity on mini toasts, while the fluffy Cheddar Cheese Gougères left me beyond satisfied. Still, both Executive Chef Albert Aviles (formerly of Bar Marmont)’s musing about the Culver City farmer’s market and the discovery that the kitchen lacked a microwave, freezer or heat lamps inspired me to stay for dinner. Other highlights: ample street parking (for now), outdoor patio seating and occasional winemaker events featuring vintners, wine experts and specially themed flights.

Excellent Post! I have been to Corkbar a few times now and I go back every time i’m in LA for business. They have a huge selection of wines by the glass which is great for me. The food is quite good as well though I have just had appetizers so far. Recommended!
