The Great French Debate

Editors and other fashion and beauty insiders are known for their love of anything French. Even if they don’t love it- they say they do.  But when it comes to manicures, there seems to be nothing as taboo in this industry as a French manicure.   I don’t even know why- I just know that I dare not sport those white tips at press events. If you have to, they say, then get an American manicure at best.

Last night, I attended an event at Dashing Diva (more on that tomorrow) where we got complimentary manicures in our choice of natural or French.  I sat by the door so I heard every editor’s sigh of disdain when the word “French manicure” was even mentioned. Seriously, before I knew protocol, I kind of liked the white tips! Of course, I’m not a fan of the extra thick line or the crazy color combination- but I don’t mind having a little white accent on the tips that hides the dirt under my nails!

This phenomenon seems only occur within the beauty and fashion industries as I frequently see Hollywood stars rocking the French. Well,  apparently those days are long gone for me as I, too, shook my head at the mention of French and opted for natural.  What do you think? Is it tacky or do you love it?

I love French manicures, but I have noticed that some look down upon them. Why is that? I am not judging the people who judge French manicures, I would just like to understand their reasoning.

I think it’s tacky, for sure. Very 80s Jersey girl.

I think at one time it was probably ok, but now when I see it I think of bridge and tunnel people…

I love them – when done nicely. Obviously anything is going to look “tacky” when done on long, thick acrylics, or when the white tip is really thick. Usually it looks pretty subtle and cleanly done.

Leigh, people will judge anything with any random reasoning. I just judged long acrylics :) I think if you love it, stick with it! Why not?

I like it on toes better than on fingers. Then again, I don’t like it on fingers at all – I always only see women with the “tacky fake acrylic look” french manicure.

french manicures and pedicures are classy and perfect. they are only bridge and tunnel when they are a.) very long and b.) done on acrylics.

Well, I like it when done decently and on short nails, but I hate it on toes XD I wish I could do it myself, I always screw up ^^

I really like them – only a thin white line please though! I’m not really a fan of colored nail polish, at least on myself.

Nobody much seems to mind french manicures here in Colorado, but we also don’t have that insufferable need to think that we’re better than people who aren’t from New York.

I think a french manicure is really nice as long as it looks clean and natural…in my opinion it’s the long, thick plastic talons that look awful and tacky

I agree with Sara on this one. The fake acrylic French I find disturbing! I love how neat a regular French manicure looks but I also love the fresh nudes and pinks without the white line. Of course, also a big fan of dark these days. But are dark nails not summery enough?

I will have to agree with everyone else – it’s the long fake acrylics that ruin it( not just the French but ANYTHING on long acrylics is gross). And I’ve seen some pretty ridiculous acrylics…clear transparent tips could be the worst I’ve ever seen!

As long as the tips are not to thickly drawn and the nails short, I think french is nice and very appropriate for business
