An old colleague friend of mine randomly took a trapeze class and two years later, quit her cushy corporate job, moved down to the Caribbean and now flies professionally for a resort. I see her pictures show up on my Facebook feed, regularly hanging by one ankle while doing midair splits. For some reason, I thought that’s what Jukari’s Fit to Fly would be about, but luckily for me it’s really more about getting fit- and less about flying.
The Jukari Fit to Fly program was developed in conjunction with Reebok and Cirque du Soleil and is a gym workout that combines cardio with strength training using your own weight as resistance. Jukari will be rolling out the program at Equinox gyms around 14 cities and this morning I had the amazing opportunity to join some other press (I caught sight of ABC News and The NY Times) for a preview workout class at Equinox’s 19th & Broadway location.
A mobile bar called the FlySet is the main prop of the class and is attached to the ceiling via a rope and adjustable to fit anyone’s height. For most of the class, you hang on to the bar and keep your feet on the ground and do things like running around or modified pull-ups using the bar. Those who are more advanced can dabble in some basic acrobatic move such as a pull up split. One advantage I found of using the FlySet is that it pushes me to my edge a bit more while stretching since I have something to hang on to. Another is that it makes me very conscious of if I’m actually doing a posture correctly since I’m constantly gauging where the bar is in relation to my body and where it should be. And lastly of course, it’s the novelty factor that keeps the entire experience fun and completely different.
When I realized five minute into class that I’d be mostly walking/jogging/skipping around my own area holding on to a bar, I didn’t really expect to break a sweat. But boy, was I wrong! About twenty minutes into the workout, I was definitely dripping but surprisingly not fatigued. And I was having a lot of fun- FlySet pullups are definitely much more enjoyable than standard pushups!
Fit to Fly is exclusively offered at Equinox 19th St (and privately to celebrities in LA) but stay tuned because it could be coming to your city soon!
Reebok also launched a line of workout wear with Cirque du Soleil that is available on their website. The pieces are supposed to allow you comfort and a wide range of motion. More on that later but I’ll just say that I’m currently wearing the workout Capri in lieu of Spanx because I grabbed the wrong form fitting dress this morning before my workout.
For lucky Equinox members in NYC, you can sign up as early as next week! See schedule below:
