Beauty, Interviews, SkincareTDO Interview: Dr. Lisa Airan

A few weeks ago I met Dr. Lisa Airan, a familiar face from the pages of Vogue,  Style.com, and various other media outlets,  either noted for her impeccable sense of fashion or her expertise as a nationally recognized dermatologist.  She was speaking at a press luncheon on behalf of BOTOX® Cosmetic, one of the most well known facial injectables on the market and one of Dr. Airan’s most popular requests at her office.

I learned some pretty cool things about BOTOX® and BOTOX® Cosmetic.  For example, I had no idea that BOTOX® could be used to treat anything from eye muscular dysfunction that results in crossed eyes to oversweating.  I also learned some important safety information.  Now that the market is flooded with different types of injectables, if you choose BOTOX®, it’s important to know that you should not mix BOTOX® with other botulinum toxins.

As I’m still in my early 20s, I haven’t seriously considered BOTOX® Cosmetic and passed on the opportunity to receive the treatment myself.  However, I have always been curious to learn more about the product.  I am not opposed to cosmetic dermatology, dentistry, plastic surgery, or any other kind of procedures as long as the consumer has been properly educated and makes the decision on his own terms. Truth be told, I believe that looking and feeling healthy and youthful brings a lot of self empowerment and there’s nothing wrong with seeing a dermatologist to blast away a wrinkle if the consumer feels that is the right option.

Below, Dr. Airan talks to TDO readers about the safety, effectiveness and even some alternatives to BOTOX®.  Plus, we also got her beauty secrets to how she, herself, always looks so amazing!

The Daily Obsession: When it comes to BOTOX® Cosmetic, what do you think is the biggest misconception?
Dr. Lisa Airan: The biggest misconception is that your face will become frozen. The results really depend on the skill of the treating doctor, so it’s possible to look very natural and still prevent and even reverse wrinkles.

TDO: What’s the biggest concern your clients have about the procedure and how do you address them?
LA: Bruising, but it is very rare. For my patients 95% of the time, there is no bruising. The bruising is related to what people are ingesting. For instance, patients taking aspirin or Advil increase the likelihood of getting a bruise.

TDO: When it comes to choosing the right dermatologist for BOTOX® Cosmetic, what should one look for?
LA: First of all you need to make sure the doctor is Board Certified and ask about other credentials. For example, I am Board Certified in Dermatology and am an a member of the American Society for Dermatological Surgery. Patients should express themselves and let the doctor know what type of results they would like, i.e. a natural look. Word of mouth is important – ask your friends who you know take BOTOX® and ask about their doctor and the experience.

TDO: How do you feel about the age groups that are seeking injectable treatments getting younger and younger? Are 20 year olds really appropriate candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic?
LA: Anyone who has a wrinkle at rest is a candidate. The age is not as important as how the patient looks for their age. Personally, I evaluate each patient and make a customized treatment proposal for each person.

TDO: For women who don’t think injectables are right for them- what are some alternatives you recommend for staying youthful looking?
LA: Stay out of the sun and use a high SPF moisturizer everyday to prevent sun damage. Definitely do not smoke. Do yoga or any other activity that helps you relieve stress. Take supplements like Vitamin D that improve skin quality.

TDO: You’re frequently in the fashion media looking amazing. What are some tips and tricks from your own beauty regimen? What are some of your favorite products?
LA: Long lashes are always great, and now there is a new prescription alternative called Latisse to make your own lashes naturally longer. I also really like the Clarisonic Skincare brush and use it everyday. My favorite products are Ocean Potion Suncare, Prevage MD Anti-Aging Treatment, and TNS Recovery Complex by SkinMedica.
