Last week I paid my first visit to Sleek MedSpa in New York’s Upper East Side with hopes that their Accent Your Body treatment could tighten up my upper body and leave me with Park Avenue worthy arms. All summer, I’d hoped to wear my new strapless dresses, only to be deterred by the reflection in the mirror and that highly irritating excessive fat that spilled over the top of the dresses just a little too much.
Many women I know also have this problem and despite all the free weights I do, I seem just to build muscle without burning off any of the fat that lies on top of it (and therefore, just makes my arms look even bigger!) I also noticed that I just have fairly loose skin in my underarms so I went in for the first of a series of treatments to try to address this problem.
Accent Your Body, developed by Alma Lasers, uses radio frequency (RF) technology to stimulate healthy collagen production in order to tighten body areas and help reduce localized fat deposits and excess fluids. After much research and reading many positive testimonials later, I decided to give it a go. I’m usually pretty adventurous when it comes to cosmetic treatments, but I do always consider the pain factor. I was really happy to find out that this treatment is 100% pain free, given that you’re in the hands of a skilled technician. Otherwise, there is the risk that you could get burned if the RF wand is left on your skin for too long a time period.
The treatment rooms at Sleek are sterile and resemble a doctor’s office more than a spa, keeping in line with the surgical and medical procedures that are performed there. While the MedSpa is overseen by Board Certified plastic surgeons, noninvasive procedures such as Accent Your Body is performed by experienced technicians rather than doctors. I felt very confident with my technician, Adriana, who explained every detail of the procedure before we started.
The Accent treatment is applied while you’re lying down on an exam table. First a liberal amount of baby oil is applied all over the treatment area in order to allow the wand to move quickly over your skin without chafing. During the treatment, a series of radioactive pulses are emitted through the wand in order to stimulate tissues. If the wand is not moved quickly enough from one area to another, the RF can burn the skin. The procedure itself is incredibly simple: the technician sets the appropriate frequency for your treatment area and simply moves the wand around the area for a series of 8 sessions, each lasting 45 seconds. The treatment itself does not hurt, but you will feel heat. Depending on how sensitive you are, the heat might feel excessive at some points but I found the temperature to the tolerable throughout.
My skin did get red around the second or third pass and the irritation lasted throughout the treatment but quickly disappeared within minutes after. The treatment areas also felt slightly sore afterwards, kind of like after you’ve gotten a vaccine but the discomfort was minor and short term. As far as results go- immediately after the session, I did feel as if my underarms were tighter than they were before. However, to be honest, I didn’t see visible results after one session though results are not usually expected until after a series of treatments. But since I didn’t feel any adverse side effects, I’ll be heading back to Sleek for a few more treatments. Stay tuned…
