Light up for a Cause

A couple weeks ago I went to a media preview event for IKEA. Having shopped there throughout college as well as before I moved into my first New York apartment, I was excited to see what was new for 2010. I learned that they recently lowered prices on a lot of their inventory…permanently- which is great for young professionals just getting started on their own. The price you used to pay for a beer pong table can now buy you the same table..and a six pack of beer. Definitely a win from all angles.
But what really impressed me was a new lamp that I hadn’t noticed before. The SUNNAN solar-powered lamp is an innovative, environmentally friendly, and socially friendly light that supports children in need. I had no idea that IKEA had a huge philanthropic initiative and for every SUNNAN lamp purchased, a similar but sturdier SUNNAN lamp will be donated to children in developing countries through an IKEA Social Initiative program.
This lamp is so cool because it is 100% run on solar cells. During the day, the lamp charges by itself using sunlight transforming solar energy into electric energy. For me, I love the vibrant colors and that it is cordless (you only need to see the tangled messes in my bedroom + dearth of outlets) . But for the child who receives the donated lamp, it literally provides them much needed light in their lives, giving them the opportunity to study or work after sunset even if they have no electricity at home.
The IKEA SUNNAN lamp is available for $19.99 in assorted colors at IKEA stores nationwide.
