New York Fashion Week SS10: Custo Barcelona

It looks like Ibiza and dancing on the beach at midnight for Custo Barcelona’s Spring 2010 collection.  Designer Custo Dalmau is known for his unapologetic hand with color, and this season’s collection was no different, with bright turqouises, startling fuschias and Aquadent like blues.  These clothes are definitely not meant for wallflowers (especially if you wear them all at one time,) or for the body conscious, as the majority of the offerings were sheer.

Keeping in line with the loungy beach feel, the clothes were airy, and loosely fit from the body.  Prints and necklines were tribal inspired, with Navajo inspired cut diamonds and varied, colored bands that ran along the hemlines of dresses.  Necklines varied from one shoulder, to off the shoulder, to wrapping ornately and constrictingly around the neck almost like the rings worn by the girls in the Kayan tribe of Burma.  In the beginning, crocheted bits interplayed with the silky prints, and gave way to feather embellishments and hemlines dripping with colorful, twisted beaded fringe.

My favorites from the collection were the loose and billowy V neck dresses, decorated with sequins or paillettes, one of which had a dipped hemline shorter in the front and longer in the back, similar to the silhouettes for the hemlines seen at the end of the Narciso Rodriguez dresses.  I also liked the white, slightly sheer lace blazer seen above, with its contrasting geometric bright pink shapes on the bottom.  I can imagine this looking great for summer thrown on over a bathing suit as styled on the model above, or with some skinny jeans.
