It was my second year in a row attending the G-Star Raw show, and it’s quickly becoming one of my favorites – thanks to its theatrical presentation, bumping, raucous soundtrack, and creative, urban looks that propel it beyond just a jeans company. I always leave thinking two things: “Where can I find the music used in the show?” and “When will that jacket be available in stores?”
Held again in the Hammerstein Ballroom, models literally emerged from out of nowhere in 1 of 5 slim cylinders, that reminded me of Jetsons teleportation devices. Unlike the slouchy and relaxed silhouettes we saw last Fall, looks this season were sharply and exquisitely tailored to the body, beginning with the first series of white, high waisted, suit inspired bathing suits, with crisp lapels and shoulder seams. The on point tailoring, beach whites, and maritime sapphire blues, combined with the 1920’s loosely rolled curled updos, sharp, pencil thin eyebrows, and scarlet lips, made me think that the inspiration was a Great Gatsby goes Riviera/Resort.
Chambray colored, elegant dresses were piped in white, along with G-Star Raw’s take on the DVF wrap dress with a blue and white key pattern propelled the beachwear influence. Men’s looks were slightly dandified, with suspenders paired with loose pants and billowing scarves for color contrast that were draped around the neck and attached to blazers. My favorites from the collection were the jackets, including one slimly cut, denim colored blazer, that would look chic layered on top of any outfit with its close seaming. I also loved G-Star Raw’s take on a slouchy sailor’s jacket, which was shrunken to fit at the waist, elbow sleeves, and a double lapel. How great would that jacket look on top of a pair of skinny jeans? I’m making a mental reminder for myself to look for that jacket in stores next year.
Front row attendance this year came with Lindsay Lohan, Taylor Momsen of Gossip Girl, Jared Leto, Mena Suvari, Kat Von D, and Ryan Kwanten (JASON STACKHOUSE of True Blood.) I practically smacked myself for not having a camera, and instead settled for gawking from afar as I brushed past Jason Stackhouse, who was posing nicely for pictures with some fans. Out of all the days to forget a camera, I had to choose this one. It appears that Christian Siriano, who was also front row, is also taping a new reality show if some sort. People attending the show were warned with signs taped to the front that entering meant they were agreeing to possibly be a part of the “Christian Siriano Project.”
