New York Fashion Week SS10: Custo Barcelona

It looks like Ibiza and dancing on the beach at midnight for Custo Barcelona’s Spring 2010 collection.  Designer Custo Dalmau is known for his unapologetic hand with color, and this season’s collection was no different, with bright turqouises, startling fuschias and Aquadent like blues.  These clothes are definitely not meant for wallflowers (especially if you wear them all at one time,) or for the body conscious, as the majority of the offerings were sheer.

Keeping in line with the loungy beach feel, the clothes were airy, and loosely fit from the body.  Prints and necklines were tribal inspired, with Navajo inspired cut diamonds and varied, colored bands that ran along the hemlines of dresses.  Necklines varied from one shoulder, to off the shoulder, to wrapping ornately and constrictingly around the neck almost like the rings worn by the girls in the Kayan tribe of Burma.  In the beginning, crocheted bits interplayed with the silky prints, and gave way to feather embellishments and hemlines dripping with colorful, twisted beaded fringe.  (more…)

Coach Yourself Into Coats

With the arrival of fall, my eye gravitates towards coats – despite the fact that I don’t really need one yet (living in SoCal, it’s still toasty). Yet I’m seriously loving some of the coats over at Coach right now and wish they were in my closet!

Their Wool Peacoat is so classic that you could wear it forever.  Also, because it’s shorter in length, you can wear it from fall through spring. The Great American Tattersall Trench adds prep to a timeless trench with red/blue plaid. It would look so chic with pretty much anything! The Cambridge Striped Coat may be my favorite though.  The stripes add an interesting visual for the eye, despite the classic shape. If I had to pick one only, this would be the one I’d want the most!

New York Fashion Week SS10: Jill Stuart

Jill Stuart’s typical feminine vintage style with some edge, was inspired by Cher for the Spring 2010 season, and led to a mixed bag of ’80s inspired looks that were very reminiscent of Balmain and the recently departed Michael Jackson.  Super short described most of the looks, and while watching the models attempt to stomp carefully down the runway to avoid a wardrobe malfunction, I was thankful for the first time ever that I was not a model.

The show started off promisingly, with tight body conscious minidresses and leggings inset with sheer panels, that looked a little space agey, but was something that I could envision on a starlet at the next MTV awards ceremony.  A series of Grecian, flowy minidresses were next, that looped invitingly around the neck and around the waist, and I mentally added the one pictured below to my wishlist, especially upon seeing it styled with some slouchy ankle boots. Kim Kardashian for OK! Magazine

Some Mondays, you need a weekend from your weekend.  Although this was the case yesterday, worn out from my weekend of Fashion Week and the US Open, I managed to rally after work and head with a friend to the Griffin, for the Kim Kardashian for OK! Magazine party, celebrating her new role of contributing Beauty Editor.  As Kim tweeted, it’s truly a dream job for her to interview makeup artists backstage.

The most googled celebrity of 2008, as expected, is very pretty and tiny in person.  Surrounded by a bevy of female and male admirers which a flank of security guards kept at bay, I saw her sitting with Brandon Davis (of ex Mischa Barton fame) and famous publicist, Jonathan Cheban, who frequently appears on their reality show.  My friend, Lillian, and I marveled over her flawless skin and I drooled over her endlessly long eyelashes.  I loved her glamorous look for the night, with her 1920′s inspired, pincurl tucked updo, and her long, metallic gray dropwaist dress. Backstage Beauty SS10: Chris Benz

Chris Benz’s SS10 show was a gorgeous flirty collection filled with color and whimsy.  Makeup artist Daniel Martin for Lancome created a healthy, sunkissed look that would match the mood. The result was a fun 60′s inspired party girl look that is still elegant and refined. Below are instructions on how to re-create this pretty, glowy look: (more…)

Backstage Beauty SS10: Thakoon

For Spring/Summer 2010, Thakoon reflected a “warrior-surf” dichotomy playing off the differences between hard/soft and natural/artificial dichotomy. There was an incorporation of “organic construction or armoring of the body, contrasting with patterns cut around the body as a canvas with soft draping” – all in muted watercolor hues like pinks, nudes and blues/aquas. Naturally, the hair had to complete this look.

Eugene Souleiman and Eva Scrivo for Wella Professionals collaborated to create a style that had tight and loose elements to reflect the collection. Sleek samurai-inspired ponytails were tight to the head, but they left loose, textured ends on the bottom half. That created a look of free-flowing waves left down in back, which provided a nice contrast to the top half. Below are more photos and instructions on how you can try this look out at home: (more…)

Get Silky with Sunshine & Shadow

Urban Outfitters has really been hitting it out of the park with their designer collaborations lately. Sunshine & Shadow is another contemporary brand who has designed a diffusion line for the retailer, calling it “Yellow Is Gold by Sunshine & Shadow.” (Doesn’t the name just make you happy?)

This oversized t-shirt dress gets turned up a notch with lovely silk – done in bright yellow, pink print or gray print. It has a really loose fit with a scoopneck and cuffed sleeves. The breast pocket as well as seam pockets add to its casualness and practicality. I really love the idea of just belting it and wearing it with sandals while the weather is warm, and when it really gets chillier (as it has already in some places), pairing it with tights and boots.  You could also belt it over skinny jeans and heels with a scarf (like this TDM Design one). How would you wear it?

Retails for $68 at the Urban Outfitters website.
