Choose Your Side in Tennis

While everyone else was attending the shows yesterday at Bryant Park and Milk Studios, I spent my entire afternoon attending the Men’s Semifinals match at the US Open in Queens. I have zero regret in dragging myself out of bed to get to the US Open after a late night out on Saturday, especially since I got to see Federer hit this best shot of his career, this incredible between the legs shot that cemented his win against Novak Djokovic (watch it here.) I wasn’t alone in taking a break from Fashion Week, as I spotted numerous fashionistas at the event, wearing the last of their summer whites with dazzling diamond tennis bracelets and crocodile Birkin bags. I even saw Anna Wintour attending both matches, sitting first with Vogue September covergirl Charlize Theron and boyfriend, Stuart Townsend, and then with Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale. (more…)
Kate Spade Goes Frenchie
I live in flats and currently am in desperate need to refresh my collection. Somehow, I’ve worn out many of my flats and they’re coming apart all around the same time. This means I need some new ones, stat! I’ve ordered a basic black pair from J.Crew as their ballet flats have served me well in the past, but I do like to have a couple of more fun pairs in my closet too.
The Frenchie Flat caught my eye when I was browsing over at Kate Spade recently, and I’m thinking it might be a great gold ballet flat to have. The patent gold leather isn’t too flashy, but isn’t too muted as to make the color look washed out. I like the black grosgrain ribbon accent, which adds an understated feminine feel. The rubber sole on the bottom should make walking in them quite comfy, too. What do you think? Are they worthy of placing an order?
Retails for $195. You can check out more details over at Endless.com.
New York Fashion Week SS10: Alice + Olivia

Some designers may be content with just a presentation, but for Stacey Bendet nothing less than an A-List party complete with open bar, live band and celebrity guests including Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Szohr, Tinsley Mortimer, and Mena Suvari, would do for her label Alice + Olivia. Last night, she showcased her Spring Summer 2010 pieces to editors, stylists and celebrities in 4 tableaus at a trendy Meatpacking space to the music of The Plastiscines.
JSG Anne and I met up to check out the pieces before heading back to the tents. Even as a perennial Alice + Olivia fan, I was particularly taken aback by the beauty of her new collection. Bendet mixed a mostly neutral palette with shots of sorbet colored dresses that are so pretty I can’t wait for them to hit stores despite my long standing protest against ombre. Her more sex-bomb pieces such as leather and skintight denim are paired with softer counterparts making the final look more feminine than edgy. The final results? A little bit of sugar, a little bit of spice, and a lot of nice.

Backstage Beauty SS10: Costello Tagliapietra

Costello Tagliapietra went for a youthful, romantic look for their SS10 season – and thus, wanted the hair to match that vibe. Lead hair stylist Thomas Dunkin of Sebastian Professional was inspired to create an elegant ‘40s inspired faux bob that was a bit playful. The result was a pretty and slightly undone loose curls that matched the femininity of the pieces that went down the runway. Behind the cut, find out how to re-create the look: (more…)
New York Fashion Week SS10: Yigal Azrouel

If a Nantucket prepster and an off-duty rocker were to combine wardrobes, you would undoubtedly end up with Azrouël’s Spring 2010 collection. There were stripes, roll-cuffed pants, drawstrings, and neutral colors galore – yet intermittently strewn with bright bursts of color (neon yellow and orange), drape-y leather jackets, body-con dresses, and asymmetrically cut shirts. The majority of the pieces were casual separates, emphasizing loose mid-thigh shorts and hard shoulders as the new basics. Azrouël’s use of sheer textiles and light, airy colors – contrasted with black, demin, and neon – allowed for a definite spring feel, without losing the sex appeal.

New York Fashion Week SS10: Erin Wasson x RVCA
When I saw Erin Wasson’s designs come down the runway, worn by her beautiful A-List model friends, it made me really really wish I were cool enough to pull off her clothes.
Usually when I’m critiquing a Ready-To-Wear collection, I default to my 3 ‘ifs’: If I had the perfect figure, If money were no issue, If I had the occasion to wear it- could I see myself wearing pieces from XYZ collection? For most of Erin Wasson’s show, I was actually thinking: no! I just couldn’t see myself in midriff baring (yes it’s true) tops, acid wash denim, nude skintight rompers, and tie dye capes that brushed the floor. But surprisingly, instead of hating the collection like I would expect, I actually ended up loving it. Fashion for me, is very much also a fantasy in addition to being something tangible, and I saw in Wasson’s collection such a nonchalant coolness, that it left me wishing I had that “it girl” quality like Becka Diamond or Dree Hemingway that it would take to make the clothes really work. The Proust Parlour
Vogue’s Fashion Night Out yesterday may have been the most hyped party of the week (the rain didn’t even start until after all the events ended!) and TDO Intern Sarah certainly had loads of fun with the Purple Lab team, meeting DvF, and even a face to face encouter with Anna Wintour! While she was out scoping the fashion scene, I headed to a more under-the-radar party hosted by their sister publication Vanity Fair. For Fashion Week, Vanity Fair is launching their own initiative called Campaign New York, which is a week long series of exclusive parties and shopping events
The center of Vanity Fair’s Campaign New York is the Proust Parlour, which is their pop up space that they modeled after a 19th Century Parisian Cafe. It houses a gallery exhibition of Vanity Fair’s popular Proust Questionnaire columns (a series of questions designed to reveal one’s personality) and opened last night with a fun cocktail party sponsored by Grand Marnier, showcasing artwork by Robert Risko. I invited my friend Jessica to stop by and check it out before we headed over to the Prabal Gurung party a few blocks down at Greenhouse. (more…)
