Style Black

MAC’s new Style Black collection was one of their most highly anticipated releases that I can remember. For weeks leading up to it, I read so many people talking about it online and the anticipation was killing me. I was actually kind of afraid that the products wouldn’t live up to all the hype, but I was really happy to be proven totally wrong on that. Honestly, this might be my favorite MAC collection of the year. (And if you could only see how many MAC products are in my bathroom, you would know that that’s really saying something!)
Style Black is all about the dark, sophisticated shades that look great during the colder weather. At first glance, they might seem unwearable, but you’d be surprised how wrong that is. Out of the entire collection, the only product that was too dark for me was the Midnight Media Mattene Lipstick. It’s a dense matte black that was just way too dark for me on its own, but if I applied it with a light touch and then layered it with one of the Glimmerglass colors, it worked a lot better. Other than that, it would be almost impossible for me to pick a favorite product from this collection because I’m really delighted with it all. I’ve been playing with it for about a week now and I find myself smiling every time I do because it’s just so much fun.
One of the things that I’m reaching for the most is the Cream Colour Base in Black Bat. It’s a creamy, blendable base with a dark burgundy finish that I’ve been layering on my eyes underneath the three different colors of the Mineralize Eye Shadows that I got my hands on and it looks amazing. I think my favorite eye shadow is the Gilt By Association color – it’s a mineralize black with gold bronze pearl swirled throughout it and it creates a beautiful dark metallic smoky eye. (I’m a sucker for a good smoky eye!) But all the shadows are gorgeous – if you’re a fan of MAC’s mineralize eye shadows, you’re not going to want to miss these.
As someone who has been known to push little old ladies out of my way to get to the new Dazzleglass shades at the MAC counter, I’m also feeling the same way about the Glimmerglass shades in Style Black. They’re all based on the color black, with pinkish purple pearl added to Blackfire, gold pearl added to Bling Black, and Blackware being the darkest one as a creamy true black. They’re very sheer, but they’re super shimmery and they look amazing layered over lipstick. Don’t tell anyone, but a few times, I’ve caught myself just taking them out of their boxes and looking at them when I have no intention of putting them on because they’re just so pretty. I think that may mean I’ve officially lost it, actually.
If you only buy one nail polish from the collection, I’d go with Baby Goth Girl. It’s a black with pinkish purple pearl and it’s very chic and sophisticated without being goth or over the top. On my nails, it shows up as a dark black base, but when the light catches it, you can totally see the almost reddish pearl glimmering and it’s completely eye-catching. Love it!
And of course, any talk of Style Black wouldn’t be complete without pointing out that it also marks the highly anticipated return of the Volcanic Ash Exfoliator. It was originally released last year and quickly became a cult classic, but it sold out so fast that anyone who hadn’t already gotten their hands on it was out of luck. And now it’s back! And even better than ever because they changed the packaging so it now comes in a tube rather than a jar, making it much more sanitary and a lot less messy. The scrub itself is amazing – it leaves your skin glowing and baby soft – and I can’t recommend it highly enough. But be warned – it’s already selling out in a lot of places (as is the rest of the collection) so you’re going to want to get your hands on it as soon as possible before you miss it again.
These are only a few of my favorites from the collection, but it really is one of those that you need to see in person to get the whole gorgeous effect, so check it out at your nearest MAC counter or at www.maccosmetics.com now.

I know – Baby Goth Girl is gorgeous and it’s kind of hard to find already. So glad I snagged a bottle before they were all gone! I actually haven’t tried Origins Charcoal Mask exfoliator so I can’t tell you how it compares to the Volcanic Ash, but I really love the Volcanic Ash, so you can’t go wrong buying it to try, in my opinion. I just hope that’s not sold out and you can find a tube!
That black eyeshadow is LEGIT. I was going to do a post just on it. So many brands have “smokey eye” colors but these MAC ones have the shimmer which automatically adds dimension. Fool proof, no shady/smudging necessary- just put on eyelids and go!

I went to my local MAC counter the day they released this collection for the sole purpose of grabbing Baby Goth Girl polish – and got the last bottle!
I’ve been using Origins Charcoal Mask exfoliator. Have you tried it? Is MAC’s better?
