It’s awards season, and with the Grammys and the Oscars around the corner, you know what that means — skin treatment specials galore!
Now I must confess, I love spas but I’m not a plastic surgery & medi-spa guru … at least not through firsthand experience. I’m still trying to stomach the idea of injecting a filler into my slowly hollowing face. Thankfully, I’ve been able to live vicariously through others by tagging along on their Botox visits, post-surgery checkups and laser treatments. And after visiting beautiful medi-spas all over L.A., I can tell you — if this magical courage were to come — where I would go: Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, Inc., featuring the talented and very personable Dr. Gabriel Chiu.
I say this because I’ve never felt so comfortable at a “doctor’s office,” in quotes because it really looks nothing like a doctor’s office — more like a fancy hotel or department store lobby. The Chanel-inspired ambience, cultivated by Dr. Chiu’s gorgeous and impeccably dressed wife and business partner, Christine, is right up my alley — and as evidenced by his secluded “VIP” room, right up some A-list celebrities’ alleys too. From sparkling crystal chandeliers and plush ottomans to sleek wall panels, patterned wallpaper and abundant fresh flowers, you can tell a lot of thought went into the place. More importantly, Dr. Chiu is fantastic, and his work is of top caliber. A formally trained general surgeon who worked extensively in reconstructive surgery before starting his own cosmetic surgery practice, he takes a creative approach to his profession — his own photography even graces the walls. He’s also honest, straightforward and quite funny — all the things I’d want from a doctor who’s about to stick me with a needle.
On the day I visited, I got to be a fly on the wall while two patients interacted with Dr. Chiu — one got a checkup on her breast enlargement; the other got Dysport® (a Botox alternative) injected in her forehead for the first time. Once I finished gawking at a cart full of breast implants that initially looked like crystal paperweights, I was focused on Dr. Chiu’s calm, comforting demeanor in addressing the patients’ questions and concerns. Heather, a porcelain-doll-faced patient in her 20s who got the Dysport, was so nervous about pain, she requested numbing cream, but quickly relaxed as Dr. Chiu chatted casually with her while poking tiny holes all over her forehead to get rid of emerging creases. I was totally convinced that the procedure didn’t bother Heather, even though she winced on occasion. Apparently, I was right; I just received an update that she’s going back for more.
So as you gaze at the freshly injected and uplifted faces of Hollywood who float down the red carpet, consider meeting Dr. Chiu for some “star treatment” as a Valentine’s Day (or Chinese New Year) present to yourself or a friend.
