Cheap & ChicCheap & Chic: August 2010

ONE. Old Navy Denim Zip-Pocket Skirt — This flattering mini skirt is perfect for the transition from summer to fall. I love the zipper detailing, which makes it slightly edgy and gives a subtle 80′s nod (in a good way). On warmer days, I’m going to be rocking simple tee and bare legs; as it gets cooler, I’ll layer on flats, tights and an oversized cardigan. Or if you have a leather jacket (on my wish list), then I’d recommend that! And at less than $25, it’s definitely a steal (that I’ve already ordered). - Connie

TWO. CB2 3-piece Ceramic Glazed Vase Gift Set — I have this dream that one day, my office decor will scream “Mad Men” meets “really cool art gallery/lloft space.” And these shiny, glazed stoneware vases will help me get there. This particular mix of shapes and colors would look neat by themselves or with fresh flowers in them … on a wood-paneled mid-century minibar … just under a big canvas painting of New York City. Also, while the whole set is a pretty good deal, each piece is sold separately, ranging from $10.95 to $21.95 — the perfect gift for those who love (or need) to decorate. - Charli

THREE. Lizzle Fortunato Jewels for Madewell Braided Chain Bracelet — Following in the tradition of awesome J.Crew/brand collaborations (see Timex and J.Crew, Fallon and J.Crew among many others), J.Crew’s sister line, Madewell, has a new, exclusive collaboration with Lizzie Fortunato jewels.  Founded by twin sisters from Delaware, I love that this jewelry line redefines the meaning of “semiprecious jewelry,” by using unusual and reclaimed materials to construct their feminine and fashionable, unique jewelry. You’ll find chiffon, georgette, crystals, and brass blended together with metal and ropes.  One of their particular trademarks is pairing more ethereal materials against those with a harder edge, such as braids of delicate fabric against heavily wrought, industrial chains.  You can get one of their signature pieces with this Fortunate distinctive design mark with this $48 Lizzie Fortunato for Madewell braided chain bracelet.  Lizzie Fortunato pieces generally run upwards of the $500 range, so this is a great, inexpensive way to get one of their quirky, inimitable pieces at a fraction of the price. - Kathleen

FOUR. Frederick’s of Hollywood Waist Control Long Short – It’s tough to find shapewear that is both actually cheap and functionally chic. Luckily, Frederick’s of Hollywood’s extensive live of shapewear is both things and more. This piece is perfect for an overall slimming effect on your lower body, with breathable fabric for comfort, and added lift and shape for your bottom. It would be perfect under an LBD–and best of all, it’s on sale for $14.99! - Nina

FIVE. Anthropologie Buttoned Lace Apron — I love to cook, but since I’m a total klutz, I’ve spilled ingredients all over myself more times than I can count. Somehow though, it’s never occurred to me to buy an apron, but after stumbling upon this one from Anthropologie, that’s all about to change. It’s super stylish and adorable, plus it’s cotton and can go right into the washing machine when I (inevitably) get it dirty. At only $28, it’s a definite must own, considering all the money it’ll probably save me on dry cleaning! - Stacey
