Dining & Nightlife, New York, Spas & Salons, TravelCity Files: New York: August 2010

Editor’s Note:  Starting this month, we’re bringing you a new feature series which will highlight some of our favorite place in our own cities or cities we travel to.  We’re kicking off August with TDO Editor Carolyn’s current obsessions in New York City. Hope you enjoy and let us know what you think!

ONE. David Yurman Townhouse — Opened earlier this year, the David Yurman Townhouse is the new flagship store of the jewelry brand- located at 721 Madison Avenue. Walking into the 2000sq ft, multi-storied space is like walking into a posh Upper East side brownstone, but with each floor decorated with beautiful Yurman creations. The store houses women’s, men’s, bridal, and one-of-a-kind couture creations not found anywhere else.  Touring the space is a little experience in itself- so if you’re in the market for a new Yurman- pop into the 64th St townhouse and enjoy a champagne and tour with your jewels.

TWO. Eve Salon — Judging from all the coverage we’ve given Eve Salon, it’s no surprise to find it on our favorites list.  In fact, I love Eve so much that it is my go-to place for a mani-pedi year-round.  All the technicians are skilled, efficient and friendly.  They always have the latest colors and magazines and the space is simple and clean and the prices are reasonable.  My manicures always last for at least a week and my pedicures for weeks at a time!  Plus, I love their seasonal specials.  For the remainder of August, be sure to try their Rainforest Escape mani-pedi, which comes with a side of margarita with your beautiful, new nails.

THREE. Avenue —  I made my return to the clubbing scene after a two year hiatus  at Avenue a few weeks ago and was treated to such a great night out with girlfriends.  The  venue, while located in West Chelsea, has much more character than your typical New York club.  The vintage style boite is intimate and loungy with room to dance downstairs and a cozy, more relaxed ambiance upstairs.  The decor was beautiful, the music was pumping, and its reigning status as one of New York’s “It” venues makes for lots of eye candy.  It’s a hot spot any night of the week, but every Tuesday they bring in high profile DJs making it the place to see and be seen.

FOUR. Casa La Femme Restaurant — Is there anything better on a hot summer night than to be transported to exotic Egypt and spend hours leisurely eating, drinking, smoking hookahs and laughing with friends?  Zagat calls Casa La Femme “sexy” and “decadent” and this editor couldn’t agree more! Diners lounge in Bedoiun style private tents and are treated nightly to music and dance performances.  It’s a little slice of Carrie Bradshaw in Abu Dhabi, right in the heart of the West Village.

FIVE. Cutler 57th St — Cutler is one of those staples in the New York salon scene- always friendly, reliable, and guaranteed great results.  The convenient 57th St midtown location became my go-to place for many an after work/ pre-party blowouts and I’ve never been disappointed!  The airy space instantly relaxes you and the skilled stylists create the look you want with no fuss and no attitude.  Some of my best blowouts come from Cutler and at $65, are much more reasonable than a lot of comparable salons in the city.
