Red Carpet Chic: Glee’s Lea Michele
Contrary to the character she plays on TV, Glee’s Lea Michele has been anything but a style dork on the red carpet this season. In non-Rachel-Barry form, this TV-star ingenue has become one of my favorites to watch out for on the red carpet for her sophisticated, modern, and risk-taking style. She hasn’t been afraid to mix it up and play with her look, by choosing bold colors, like the bright saffron-yellow Zac Posen she wore to this year’s Tony Awards, or new designers, like the Erdem she wore to the 2010 Fox Up Front Party. Bold lip colors, blunt Zoey Deschanel-esque bangs, dramatic updos: these are just a few of the things she’s used to complete her looks. You may disagree with some of her sartorial choices, but at least you know she’s always trying and cares about fashion!
Check out some of my favorite looks from this year, beginning with this year’s Teen Choice Awards:
1. Teen Choice Awards - I always expect to see a lot of monochrome bandage-style Herve Leger dresses at an event like this, which is why I was excited to see Lea Michele stand out from the crowd in this glittery, jade-colored, leaf-patterned Naeem Khan dress. Still body-conscious and figure flattering, the peek-a-boo nude color beautifully flatters her sun-kissed skin. I love a fun, colorful print on the red carpet, and the sequin embellishment up the dress’s sophistication factor, which she off-sets with casually bouncy, glossy brunette waves.
2. SAG Awards - One of my favorite dresses from the night is Lea’s jungle-green Catherine Malandrino ruffled grown, for its glamorous, bohemian casualness and laid-back sexiness. The gown’s plunge front neckline, the wide band and the gathers emphasize Lea’s tiny waist, and the unique color warms up Lea’s ivory skin and plays up the russet tones in her hair. Most importantly, how comfortable does the dress look? Lea Michele must have swanned around the afterparty in glee, with not just her SAG award, but knowing that she looked beautiful and stunning in this softly drifting dress amidst other actresses swathed in Spanx form-fitting gowns.
3. Tony Awards - I have a particular fondness for dresses in the yellow spectrum, with the penultimate being Michelle Williams’ beautiful, mustard-yellow Vera Wang from the Oscars, but this comes a close second. How ebullient does Lea
Michele look in this mermaid-style Zac Posen! The dress has some beautiful architecture going on, with bias-cut pleats acros the bodice, that show off the star’s tiny proportions, flowing out old-Hollywood-style with a beautifully sweeping train. Keeping the look focused on the color of the dress by using minimal accessories, I only wish that she had chosen a less severe hairstyle and softer lip color to not compete with the
4. Fox Television Critics Association All-Star Party - Lea went beach-glam for this party, in this Giambattista Valli paint-splattered maxi dress. Keeping it laid-back with tousled hair and side-swept bangs, Lea looks touchable, and girl-next-door pretty in this soft, floor length gown.
What do you think of Lea’s look on the red carpet this season? What has been your favorite?
