Recently, I took a ill-timed, direct red-eye flight from Los Angeles to New Orleans for a wild wedding weekend, only to regret not taking a nap before the three-and-a-half-hour trip. (Anyone who was there during Halloween/Voodoo Fest weekend might know that it was practically impossible to check in to your hotel early.) Unfortunately, this was my first time in The Big Easy, and wandering sleep-deprived through the French Quarter at 8 a.m., fueled only by a cup of chicory coffee and a plate of beignets, was — well, not so easy.
Imagine my elation when I literally stumbled upon the charming Kinetix Spa and Salon (formerly Ofadean). On a whim, I asked owner Michael Mikolajewski if there was a “quiet room.” He smiled and gently said the prettiest word I’d heard all morning, “Yes.” I then asked if he could accommodate me and my delirious husband, despite the fact that the salon was bustling with some of what must have been 100 bridal parties in town that weekend. Again he said, “Yes.” (He really had that southern hospitality thing down.)
We both breathed a gigantic sigh of relief as he led us upstairs into the co-ed changing/locker rooms, complete with hardwood floors, plush robes and stone-tiled showers — aromatherapeutic scents perfuming the air. My husband was generously granted permission to nap in a back room while I read magazines in the peaceful upstairs waiting area, comforted by a cool breeze, a gorgeous view of the aged storefronts outside, a pitcher of cool water … and best of all QUIET (never mind the cab honking his horn on the street).
Stocked with brands like Davines and OPI, Kinetix is a full-service spa and salon that offers a menu of massages, face and body treatments, bridal and nail services, makeup application, hair cuts/colors/styles/treatments … even hot towel shaves for men. Prices are reasonable, with massages and facials starting at $90/50 minutes, and the staff is both laid-back and talented. According to my husband, Michael gives the best massage he’s had yet. Even without a solid stretch of sleep, we were made ready to parade through the streets all night with big smiles on our faces. So the next time you’re in New Orleans and need some mind-body rejuvenation (or a drop-dead gorgeous updo), remember this little French Quarter oasis.
Kinetix Salon-Spa is located at 536 Bienville St., New Orleans, Louisiana, walking distance from most of the hotels in the French Quarter. Check out their services online at kinetixspasalon.com or call 504-522-3318 to book an appointment.
