Cheap & ChicCheap & Chic: May 2011

ONE. Goorin Bros. Floppy Hat — I happily stumbled upon a Goorin Bros. hat shop the other day, and decided I must share my excitement. While I don’t wear hats often, I was motivated by the store’s nostalgic, gorgeous interior to start channeling Holly Golightly. Goorin Bros., a Pittsburgh-turned-San-Francisco-based, family-owned company, has been selling hats since 1895 and now has a fantastic selection ranging from less than $20 to more than $300. My favorite, the Lucia, is one of their genuine Panama hats, which are hand woven in Ecuador and take up to two weeks to make! Of course, it’s a whopping $350, which brings me to their gorgeous floppy hats, most of which are less than $50. While I’m partial to Bella today, I might want Eden tomorrow. In any case, they’re worth collecting for those days when you want to look retro-fabulous. - Charli

TWO. eos Lemon Drop Lip Balm — If you’re anything like me, you have about a hundred lip balms floating around your various bags and cosmetics drawers. I did too, but then I discovered eos’ products and now they’re the only ones I carry with me on a daily basis. My favorite out of all their flavors is the Lemon Drop Lip Balm (with Sweet Mint running a close second). It comes housed in a sphere with a twist top, so once you’ve closed it, it’s not going to open and get all over your purse (a big plus). It has the most delicious lemon scent to it, plus the balm is full of shea butter, jojoba oil and Vitamin E, so it’s super moisturizing. It even has an SPF 15 in it to protect your lips from the sun. Plus, it’s only $3.49 at most drugstores (even cheaper when it’s on sale or you find a coupon). Cheap & Chic at its finest! - Stacey

THREE. J.Crew Merino Keyhole Popover – I love, love, love this lightweight top that I picked up from jcrew.com (on sale, and during an extra 30% off promotion!). The material and the loose boatneck are super comfortable, and the keyhole tie in the back is too cute. It’s long enough to pair with leggings for a casual look, or to wear with skinny jeans, heels, and a moto jacket for a night out. It’s perfect for the transitioning weather in Chicago, and elsewhere, I’m sure! - Nina

FOUR. Dior Electric Tropics Nail Duo in Paradise — I’m currently obsessing over this fabulous hot pink color. I’m not usually one for bright bold polishes, but this one is truly fantastic and fun.  It comes as a set – a more matte hot pink polish and a super shiny top coat.  If you’re normally timid but are feeling adventurous as the weather warms up, I recommend testing this out on your toes. I guarantee it will get you in the mood for summer. This nail polish might be pricier than others, but at under $50, you can still consider it as a cheap thrill (that feels like a luxury)! - Connie

FIVE. Avec Ma Soeur Cards – Who needs a momentous occasion to send a card? Avec Ma Soeur creates hip greeting cards not only for birthdays and weddings but just for the fun of it. All of their cute cards are blank on the inside for your very own unique message to that special someone. One of my favorites is the delightful sentiment: “You Can Stand Under My Umbrella” as well as “Yes, you can borrow my toothbrush”, expressing just how everyday things can be the most romantic. $4 each.  - Liz
