San Francisco is one of the best dining cities in the country so almost every time I visit, I’m always looking for a new place to try. While there are new trends and restaurants constantly opening in the city, I think there’s something to be said for a true classic- an oldie but goodie. That’s why during my last trip, I made a point to visit One Market, a Michellan starred restaurant located at one of the most recognizable addresses at the top of the San Francisco Embarcadero.

One Market, which opened in 1993, has been celebrated for almost two decades as one of the city’s classic, sophisticated dining establishments.  The restaurant is helmed by Chef Mark Dommen, and serves farm to table fare in an airy space that never feels stuffy or rushed.  The ambiance, much like the food itself, is very classic California Americana – spacious seating, a wood-fired grill, open kitchen, floor to ceiling windows, and a warm and friendly bustle.

I stopped by one evening after a long drive up from LA, and the simply hearty food and fresh cocktails were exactly what I needed. The restaurant features seasonal menus highlighting fresh seafood, produce, meats, poultry, game and other organic products from the Bay Area.  Classic California fare such as Roasted Sturgeon, Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin and Roasted Liberty Farm Duck Breast made with sweet potato, shiitake mushrooms and sesame are hearty options for the meat lover.  I, of course, can never say no to a good duck breast so chose that for my entree.

The restaurant also offers a number of vegetarian and even vegan options which are clearly marked on the menu. If beef carpaccio is not your thing, try their delicious Beet Carpaccio tossed with fresh chevre cheese and a sherry vinaigrette.  And of course, I just could not help myself but order a side of the Potato Tots served with their house made ketchup.


The restaurant also offers a Market Menu that you can’t beat- $39 for a Three Course dinner.  For the true meat lover, they also offer a Weekly Beast menu: $45 for a 4 course meat-of-the-week prix fixe.

And lastly- to me- one of the true signs of a great restaurant is their signature cocktail menu and One Market does not disappoint with a list of unique and delicious drinks. Be sure to try The Elegant Gypsy (Chivas Regal, Dubonnet Rouge, Luxardo Amaretto, simple syrup, lemon juice, cherry bitters) or the First Bloom (Plymouth Gin, Cointreau, simple syrup, citrus juices, egg whites, peach bitters). Intrigued? All the more reason to check out what else they have on their haute cocktail menu.
