Beauty, Hair, Los Angeles, Spas & SalonsHow to Blow-Dry Like a Pro

Step 1: Gather your supplies.
Step 2: Call Yoshi Hair Studio.
Step 3: Book a one-on-one blow-dry class with celebrity hairstylist and Yoshi Hair Studio founder Yoshi Hagiwara.

Seriously, it’s one of the best things I ever did for myself. For just $150 (the price of about four professional blowouts) “master Yoshi” helped me solve the mystery of how to get salon-like results at home. Here’s how it works:

First, Yoshi asks you to bring in everything you use when you usually give yourself a blowout, from the brushes to the actual blow-dryer. Then, he attentively watches you blow-dry your hair your usual way. (You might anticipate this to be awkward and embarrassing, but Yoshi is so nice, you quickly feel comfortable.) Once he gets a feel for how you blow-dry your hair, he gives you feedback on how to improve your blowout — from using better tools to holding the brush more effectively. And, since giving people the right haircut for their face shape is his speciality, he gives you feedback on how your haircut might be affecting your results.

In my case, my cut wasn’t quite right for my face shape, so he did a little shaping (which would normally cost extra). He also showed me how to correctly hold a round brush when blow-drying the side of my hair that wants to flip the wrong way. Also enlightening: If I sectioned my hair, I’d get a much better finish. I always thought sectioning was time-consuming, but it turns out I only need four butterfly clips and a few extra minutes in the a.m. No longer do I have wet spots after I blow-dry, and my hair lays the way it’s supposed to. Uh-mazing.

With all that said, if blow-drying your own hair seems like too much work, there’s always Yoshi’s Haute Air. Simply choose from a collection of $35 blowouts, including “sexy beachy waves” and “extremely voluminous bouncy locks.” Bonuses: Mini-relaxation treatments while you wait, a quiet minimalist atmosphere and a super-accommodating staff. Yoshi’s also known for his Amino Conc Treatment and Magic Water, which both help improve the condition of your hair for a better blowout.
