I first fell in love with Stella McCartney when she launched her inaugural collection for Adidas. I remember looking through the collection photos thinking I’d never seen workout wear like that before — sleek, strong and geometrical, but also sweet and girly with its light pinks and dusty roses. I longed for a body to pull the clothes off, to be a Stella McCartney girl — equal parts strong and feminine.
When I was introduced to Stella McCartney’s new fragrance L.I.L.Y. this past week, I felt immediately transported back to my early days of Stella crushing. Despite L.I.L.Y. standing for “Linda, I love you” an homage to Stella’s mother, the fragrance itself is decidedly less cheesy. The bottle reminded me of that athletic collection that I coveted — a juxtaposition of masculine and feminine, modern and dainty, with sexy cutouts to boot! The fragrance is a combination of light florals laced with distinct notes of pepper and truffles — another lovely, though unexpected, combination. The designer describes the scent as “the passage of time across a forest floor,” and if you were to imagine a pretty time lapse through the woods, you could definitely smell the sparkle of sunlight in the effervescent top notes. You can also smell the more sensual notes of moss and truffle that contrast the ultimately green and floral lily of the valley the perfume centers around. A Stella girl is never too prissy and L.I.L.Y. takes a classically powdery fragrance and transforms it to something that is not too soft and with an edge. In fact, I think I like this so much because it reminds me of a lighter, livelier version of YSL Elle, a scent from my old collection that I always used to dab when I needed to feel fierce and empowered.
L.I.L.Y. is available at Sephora.com in 1.0oz, 1.7oz, 2.5oz as a travel spray.
