Celebrities, Food, Gift Guides, Los Angeles — Picture Perfect Gift: The Macallan Masters of Photography with Elliot Erwitt
Remember the famous photo of Jackie Kennedy at JFK’s funeral? Or the ones of Marilyn Monroe on the set of The Seven Year Itch and The Misfits? Those were taken by Elliot Erwitt, the man responsible for some of the most iconic photographs of our time. Erwitt is the fourth photographer to team up with The Macallan, my favorite Scotch, for their award-winning Masters of Photography series. (Previous collaborations were with Annie Leibovitz last year, Albert Watson in 2010 and Rankin in 2008.) The result? About 2,030 limited-edition sets featuring unique single malt Scotch whiskies paired with Erwitt’s gorgeous autographed photos.
Now, 2,030 might seem like a lot, but that number is worldwide. Only 320 of those sets are allocated for the U.S. market, and only to the finest purveyors of liquor (think Park Avenue Liquor Shop). And oh, they’re $1,500 a pop.
Still with me? Good. Because this would be the perfect holiday gift for your favorite Scotch lover.
I recently checked out the Elliot Erwitt Masters of Photography Edition at its U.S. launch, held at L.A.’s gorgeous Leica Gallery, and my passion for both Scotch and art were given a refreshing jolt. Was it The Perfect Ten (a blend of The Macallan Fine Oak 10 Years Old and ginger beer)? Or was it the fact that I was standing by Matthew McConaughey, Camila Alves and Erwitt himself? I’m inclined to say both, but after getting a bit lost in the photos on display while sipping The Macallan 18, I think those did it.
“Elliot Erwitt’s Great Scottish Adventure” features 158 black-and-white photographs taken by Erwitt to capture the essence of Scotland. It includes plenty of dogs (one of his favorite subjects), a traditional Highland wedding, the line at the charming Peedie Chippie Fish & Chips truck in Finstown, and perhaps my favorite photo, a beautiful nude woman on the Isle of Eriskay. Now, I’ve never been to Scotland but these were such striking photos, I was just about ready to book a trip.
As for the Scotch, The Macallan Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno hand-selected 58 exclusive single malt whiskies to go with 58 of Erwitt’s photographs. Dalgarno’s intent was to “interpret the very essence of the photograph it is matched with.” (I wonder how much whiskey was sampled in this endeavor?) Each limited-edition set (pictured above, at left) contains a beautiful bottle of Scotch contained within a book of Erwitt’s photos of Scotland, as well as a matching 11″ x 14″ print signed by Erwin.
Check out the entire project here, and — if you’re inclined to drop $1,500 on the best holiday gift ever — use The Macallan Masters of Photography contact form to find out where you can buy a set. Hurry, though; collectors are probably already tracking them down.
