Beauty, NailsSummer PixieDust

zoyaNow this is exciting!  Remember that fabulous PixieDust collection that Zoya put out earlier this year? Well, it was so popular that they just released a set of six new Summer PixieDust shades and they’re every bit as gorgeous as the first collection, just in brighter, in more colorful shades perfect for the hot weather. Here are the six new shades you’ll be obsessed with:

  • Solange – A glittering pale yellow
  • Beatrix – A glittering light orange
  • Destiny – A glittering pink-orange (pictured)
  • Miranda – A glittering raspberry
  • Stevie – A glittering lavender
  • Liberty – A glittering dark aqua blue

Bath & Body, Beauty, FragranceSugary Lemon Goodness

vanillalemonThere’s a reason this site is called The Daily Obsession — there’s nothing better than when you find a great new… well, anything, to obsess over. It’s so fun, isn’t it?

Right now, my fragrance obsession is the new Fresh Vanilla Lemon fragrance from LAVANILA.  You guys, it smells sooo amazing.  (Three o’s for emphasis!) The scent was inspired by the versatility of Madagascar vanilla and also has notes of lemon, watery fruits and fresh bamboo: it’s very clean and fresh, but also warm and sweet at the same time. I also like that it’s subtle and not overpowering… because if it were too in-your-face, it would smell like you rolled around in a bakery and well, no one wants that!  Also, I love that LAVANILA infuses their scents with essential oils that contain vitamin-rich antioxidants instead of chemicals so they’re better for those with allergies or sensitive skin. The fragrance is limited edition, so get your hands on it now before it vanishes and you never get a chance to smell its lemony-vanilla goodness.  That would just be tragic.

Bath & Body, BeautyThree Whishes

When the weather is hot outside, I have to take a lot of showers because I find it impossible to get into bed at night feeling dirty from the day. (Ed. note: This New Yorker is so jealous right now.) I’m also on the lookout for great new products I can use to switch things up a little (hate being bored using the same ol’ thing every shower) and I’ve recently discovered Whish Body.

coconutSo far, I’ve tested the Three Whishes Body Wash in Coconut and the Three Whishes Sugar Scrub in Almond and I’m loving them both!  The Coconut body wash has such an exotic, tropical vacation scent to it — sort of warm and a little spicy, but the coconut note stands out and it’s intoxicating. When I use it, I can close my eyes and pretend that I’m showering in Hawaii instead of in my condo in Los Angeles. It lathers up nicely and a little goes a long way, so you don’t have to use a ton of it to get results, which I always appreciate.  (How annoying are those body washes that make you use like, half the bottle before you get any scrubsuds?  The worst, right?)

The Sugar Scrub is one of my favorite scrubs that I’ve tried this year. I’m all about the exfoliation, but I have sensitive skin so I don’t want my scrubs to be too rough or abrasive and this one isn’t at all. It has a delicious nutty scent to it and gets rid of all my flakey dead skin without taking off any “good” skin along with it. It creates a great base for your favorite moisturizer (maybe their Three Whish Body Butter? I haven’t tried any of those yet, but now I’m dying to!)  I also really appreciate the fact that the scrub is thick – it’s not liquidy so you get more bang for your buck AND there isn’t any liquid to slide down into your tub, creating a slippery standing hazard (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wiped out in my tub from scrubs like that. I’m fairly convinced I’m going to wind up in the hospital one day after one of those incidents and that is going to be super embarrassing).

Beauty, MakeupLip 20

Kaplan MD glossI have what can only be described as an unnatural amount of lip products stored all over my condo. I’m not exaggerating — there are some in the garage, some in my bathroom, some in the hall closet…  Lip stuff takes up a lot of space in bulk! But even so, I’m always down for discovering a new brand because, really, can one ever have too much makeup?

Kaplan MD is a brand based in Beverly Hills and they were nice enough to send over some of their LIP 20 Treatment Glosses for me to check out.  LIP 20 is the first anti-aging treatment gloss that does a ton of different things besides give your lips a shot of color — it moisturizes, repairs, enhances your lip’s natural fullness and has an SPF 20 in them so you’re protecting them from the sun every time you apply it. I tried out three different shades – Tangerine Sparkle (a bright coral), Candy Sparkle (a light pink) and Plum Sparkle (a medium plum) and liked them all.  They also have an interesting scent to them — something like licorice maybe?  Hard for me to tell, but it’s pleasant and not overpowering, so that makes it a winner in my book, whatever it is.

The glosses themselves are a bit of a splurge at $30 apiece, but they do have a luxurious feel to them – they’re not tacky or sticky at all, and they really do moisturize incredibly well. Plus, they have a little mirror at the top so you can use it to apply the gloss if you’re running around.  Such a nice touch!

Beauty, NailsSprinkle Some Pixie Dust

pixieI try so many different products, sometimes I can forget how fabulous it is when I find one that I really love. And then something like Zoya’s new PixieDust collection comes out and I find myself squeeing all over the place and texting all my friends to tell them they MUST buy it. This is why I love writing about products so much — because when you find one that’s so amazing you want to shout it from the rooftops, it’s just plain fun.

PixieDust is a collection of six new shades with a super cool finish – it’s textured, matte AND sparkling, all at the same time.  (I know it sounds hard to believe, but I’m wearing one right now and that pretty much perfectly describes it).  Here are the shades available right now:

  • Dahlia – A sparkling black
  • Chyna – A sparkling red
  • Godiva – A sparkling nude
  • Vespa – A sparkling green
  • Nyx – A sparkling blue
  • London – A sparkling grey

Every single one of these is gorgeous.  Every.  Single.  One.  I’m currently wearing Dahlia and I cannot stop looking at my hands.  The color is super, super sparkly and you can definitely tell that it’s textured, but not in a very chunky way that can get annoying.  And I love that they dry matte – it gives the shades an extra something special that other textured polishes don’t have. Bath & Body, BeautyEscape to Coconut Beach

Farmhouse Fresh Coconut Beach Body Scrub

If there’s one thing to know about me, it’s that I love a good body scrub. Nothing makes me feel cleaner (especially after the gym) than a nice long exfoliation session in the shower. It always leaves my skin super soft and glowy and there’s just something so satisfying about the process. My new scrub obsession is Farmhouse Fresh’s Coconut Beach Body Scrub. I’ve never tried a Farmhouse Fresh product that I didn’t love and this one only extends the streak. It smells ah-mazing – the pineapple-coconut scent immediately takes me to a tropical island right in my own bathroom (at least until I get out and remember that I have to make my own bed!) I like that it gets all the dry skin off without being harsh and thanks to the shea butter and coconut water, I don’t feel like I’ve stripped my body of any moisture after I’ve used it. It’s also 90% natural, which is great if you’re trying to cut down on the chemicals that you put on your body, and best of all, it comes in a plastic jar. If you’re not a klutz like me, this may not seem like a big deal to you, but plastic doesn’t shatter (very important when you’re handling slippery products) and it also won’t hurt nearly as much if you drop it on your foot. (If I could only count the times I’ve done that…)  Love this one!

Beauty, MakeupStila Takes Us Into Spring

Stila Color Balm LipstickAhh, spring. Even though I live in Los Angeles now and don’t really have to suffer through “winter” anymore, it still gets cold here (relatively speaking) and I’m still always excited when the new spring collections come out and remind me that warmer weather is just around the corner. So, naturally, I was super happy to get my hands on a few new products from Stila that just scream “Spring!”

The new Color Balm Lipsticks are a really interesting mix of lipstick, lip balm and lip gloss. They’re very pigmented, which I’m happy about because my pet peeve in lip products is when you spend a lot of money on them and then can barely notice that they’re on your lips. Luckily, that’s not the case here at all — I tried out Valentina, an orange poppy shade, and Gemma, a pink violet, and both of them have tons of color to them. However, they’re not only colorful, they’re also moisturizing and shiny (hence the balm and gloss aspects) and have two super cool touches to them — a mirrored cap for easy application on the go and the sides of the tubes have the word “Stila” printed on them with the color of the shade peeking through, so you don’t have to open the lipstick to see which shade you’ve got. Such a good idea!

wettosetI also tried out two of the new Stay All Day 3D Wet-to-Set Eyeshadow Trios.  They come in several different color palettes and I tested First Light, a trio of browns and pinks, and Safari, which is greens and browns. Like the name suggests, you can use them dry or apply them wet for a more saturated color payoff. The shadows all blend easily and lasted the whole day on me (with a primer) when applied wet. If you’re a Stila addict like me, definitely check these out.  What says “Spring is almost here” more than some new makeup?!

Bath & Body, BeautyOiled Up

Josie Maran Argan OilThere’s nothing I hate more than being greasy or dirty, so for the longest time, I avoided trying Josie Maran’s Argan Oil, even though I’d heard nothing but great things about it.  I was afraid that if I used it, it would make me feel oily or it wouldn’t soak in and I would have to shower again (or wind up looking like I hadn’t showered at all).  Well I finally gave in and got a bottle of it to try… and I was so, so wrong.  You guys, it’s fantastic!  The older I get, the more I appreciate multi-purpose products and this is so that.  You can use it in a myriad of different ways, including as your daily face moisturizer, in your hair to treat split ends, on your nails to soften your cuticles, on rough patches of skin on your body (like your elbows or knees), or even as a bath oil in the tub.  I’ve done all of those now except used it in a bath and I’m kind of obsessed with it.

The product itself is a 100% pure Argan Oil that’s grown organically in Morocco.  It’s cold pressed to make sure that it’s the best quality, highest-grade oil, and it comes in a recyclable glass bottle that was purchased from women’s cooperatives in Morocco to help support their social and economic welfare. Kinda cool, right?  And I love that it dispenses the oil from a dropper – it makes it easy not to use too much at once and waste it.  It’s just a super moisturizing product that absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave any greasiness afterwards – perfect to use on the go or at night when it has even more time to sink in and do its job.  I just love the way it leaves my skin looking.  If only I’d tried it sooner!

Beauty, MakeupFinish Like A Pro

MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Finish

MAKE UP FOR EVER and I have been having a little bit of a love affair this year, so I was really excited to try their new Pro Finish Multi-Use Foundation.  I’m not normally a huge fan of powder foundations – I’m definitely more of a liquid foundation kind of girl – but if you’re looking for a light to medium coverage foundation that’s easily portable, this one might be right up your alley.

Like almost all of MAKE UP FOR EVER’S products, it’s available in a huge selection of shades, which is fabulous.  I’m so glad we’ve come such a long way from the days when foundations were available in five or so different colors.  That was the worst, right?  You can apply Pro Finish with the sponge included in the compact in two ways – wet or dry.  Applying it dry gives you more coverage and a matte finish, wet gives you sheerer coverage and a satin finish.  The coverage is definitely buildable, but I’d say if you’re looking for serious coverage, I’d still go with a liquid foundation over this – Pro Finish is more medium coverage (at least on me).  I love the texture of this powder and how easily and perfectly it blends into my skin (make sure you get color matched to ensure that you buy the perfect shade for your skin tone).  On me, it lasts almost all day so there’s really no need to reapply, but if you’re heading out for the night after work, it’s easy to just toss the compact in your bag for touch ups on the go.  I do wish it had an SPF in it, but since I always wear sunscreen anyway, that really isn’t too much of a sticking point.  The love affair continues!

Bath & Body, Beauty, MakeupBack to Basics

SW Basics Lip Balm Flights

I buy so many “big” name brand makeup and body care items that one of my favorite things is when I can discover a smaller, more indie brand that isn’t in every single store yet.  It feels like a great achievement, like I’m in on a secret that the rest of the world doesn’t know yet.  (Plus, it always feels good supporting smaller businesses).  My newest band obsession is S.W. Basics of Brooklyn.  All of their products are made in small batches by actual people (imagine that!) in Brooklyn and they’re ethically sourced with holistic ingredients.  It’s so nice to know that what you’re putting on your body doesn’t have any chemical or “bad” ingredients.  As the company says, their products are “super-simple, pared down blends of the absolutely essential ingredients needed for effective, truly all-natural skincare.”  READ MORE
