Accessories, Insider's ObsessionsInsider’s Obsession: Sandy Leong

sandy_leong

Sandy Leong, of eponymous luxury jewelry line Sandy Leong Jewelry, isn’t just a talented designer–she’s a fabulous woman. When we first met her at a press preview months ago, we knew we’d be gawking at her line of modern structural jewels (just take a look at this statement topaz ring and twist bangle with diamonds)–what we did not expect was to end up chatting and laughing with her for an hour! Naturally, we needed to know what all her obsessions were…so we can add them to our own list!

ONE. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara — Look beyond the catchy name; this mascara is my go to daily secret for keeping my peepers looking peppy.

TWO. Sunday Riley Good Genes Treatment — In love with this skin treament – it really does add a daily glow to the face  – no secret about it!

THREE. Sandy Leong Origin Mesh Bracelet — Part of my classic collection and still a favorite- this 18K gold bracelet lays nicely flat against the wrist- perfect for anyone with an active lifestyle.  I even wear it while playing tennis!

FOUR.  Case Mate iPhone5 ID Case — This cover with room for my ID, metro card and Visa — great for those days when I’m walking the dogs, running errands, picking up groceries and oh, wait, what are those cute jeans doing in the window?

FIVE.  Dark denim by IRO  — I love the way these jeans fit.  They are super flattering and have been my go to denim brand lately.

soxietySometimes, there’s nothing better than a lazy weekend morning spent in bed…and to make it extra cozy, I love throwing on a pair of soft socks. Soxiety is a new online retailer that offers high-quality socks, designed and made in Northern Italy, with affordable pricing. From mercerized cotton lisle and luxurious cashmere, these are socks made to last.

Cashmere socks are a great go-to gift for the men in my life – one that people rarely splurge on, but always make people happy to receive. Even more so, I’m loving their new Women’s Collection for myself! I got to try the Gray Ribbed Cashmere Socks, and they are oh-so-lovely. These socks are knee-length, so I just pull them over leggings and push them down slightly at home, but also are a great length for under knee-high boots. This particular pair is a warm mix of merino wool and cashmere in a classic ribbed weave, with a touch of lyrca so their shape holds up. I’ve been grabbing them whenever I feel a bit chilly, especially in the early mornings before I get up to make coffee. They feel so luxurious and just plain good.

I can’t wait to try some other styles – and honestly, this might be my destination of choice for great gifts, especially for my sock-fiend friends.

cygnet cygnet2

Great design has always been an obsession of mine, and since having a little one, my eyes have been opened to a whole new world of fashion, function, and versatility for the younger set. 7 A.M. Enfant’s French designer, Rebecca Campora, understands what a stylish and practical parent needs by anticipating trends and infusing her cutting edge sensibility. When buying baby stuff, I’ve learned that half of it you really don’t need, and the other half (or more like a quarter), you use constantly and thank your lucky stars that it’s there for you when you need it. Our cold-weather accessories from 7 A.M. fall into the beyond-necessary category, and are geniously well-designed to be lightweight, adaptable, and useful. As we ran around ice-covered Manhattan this weekend, I noticed 7 A.M. accessories on so many toasty babies, and they certainly kept us going from museums to dessert dates!

The Cygnet is  a reversible plush blanket-cover which slips over any stroller, carseat, or carrier in a matter of seconds to keep precious cargo warm and toasty. It even pops out as a blanket wherever and whenever needed. It’s light as a feather and tucks into its own compact carry case so it’s on call when wind, rain (it’s water-repellant!), and chills come knocking. A thoughtfully placed drawstring locks heat in while adjusting to any size, fitting newborns up to four years. The fluffiness comes from faux-down filling for heat retention while being soft and light enough to keep babies warm safely. The shell is silky soft and will never irritate even on bare skin. I’m able to clip it to the stroller with two or four strong velcro hook and loop straps, which frees me from relying on expensive custom sleeping bags that can only be used on one stroller. Side zippers allow either baby or parent’s hands to go in and out to function or adjust without releasing heat. I love the reversible factor too, so the color can change with the mood of the day. If it takes a spill or two, there’s no stress as it is machine washable. The Cygnet is one of those genius inventions that I now can’t imagine life without!

If you weren’t already familiar with The 2 Bandits, get ready. The San Francisco-based line by designer Tamar Wilder uses gorgeous geometric shapes with a Southwestern boho influence. Today, the line launches its Spring 2014 collection, inspired by the Northern Lights (it’s a natural electrical phenomenon that features streamers of reddish or greenish light in the sky). “Many cultures believe that the Northern Lights are the appearance of “dancing souls”–Mother Nature at its raddest. I wanted to capture that in a way that could be enjoyed every day, from every angle,” explains Wider

nik-stone

If you’re looking for unique, artisan jewelry with an industrial twist this holiday season, look no further than Los Angeles native Jelena Nik’s collection, Nik Stone. I’ve been racking up compliments with her Nailed It Rings this season (pictured), which layer well for a delicate-yet-dangerous rocker vibe.

The unisex collection of sterling silver pieces are definitely eye-catching, featuring rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces themed around nails, wrenches, hammers and nuts. Embedded within each piece are small signature black diamonds, a symbol of strength. READ MORE

roshambo

What baby can be without a pair of cool shades? I love hearing about parents who notice that they can’t find those perfect baby products- and go out and create them! Ro Sham Bo, which is the Japanese name for the classic rock-paper-scissors game, is the brainchild of Scott + Julia, a couple from California. They were at a loss trying to find cute high-quality kid sunglasses, so instead of settling, figured they’d go to work and benefit autism research in the process! I couldn’t resist a pair of the lavender Roshambo shades for my little one, called Punky Brewster (what a blast from the past!). As soon as I pulled the sunglasses out from their clear carry case, I was impressed by their lightweight flexibility. My mind always runs to safety, and fortunately, the arms of the glasses are made of strong but soft bendable plastic to prevent any freak accidents with running toddlers. The lenses are shatter proof and small parts have been tested for safety. Considering another view of safety, pediatric optometrists warn that most of the lifetime ultraviolet damage done to a person’s eyes occurs during childhood and the risk for retinal damage from the sun’s rays is greatest in children less than 10 years old. Damage doesn’t necessarily appear until later stages in life- but why risk it? Roshambo shades aren’t just cool, they have 100% UVA and UVB protection.

So the glasses are great in theory, but the big question is- will kids actually wear them (without a screaming fit)? I am a big believer in comfort in conjunction with fashion, whether for me or my daughter. Roshambo is designed to be fun and feel great, too. All I had to do was show the munchkin how cute she looked in the mirror with sunglasses on and now she wants to wear them, sun or rain! Roshambo has the best full damage replacement guarantee for their shades, if your frames break or get damaged in the first year of their use. If one lens pops out and is lost, no problem- they’ll replace it. Little people deserve big shades!

hairclipsEven though my lil’ girl has a while before she has enough hair for braids and ponytails, I adore finding mini bows for her hair to complete an outfit (and make sure that no one thinks she’s a boy!). One of my favorite sites to find the cutest accessories is Lil Sugarplum. Started by a creative mom who dreamed of making hair accessories for her daughter, she named the company “Lil Sugarplum” after the nickname her father gave her when she was young. Any imaginable shape, bow, and animal, and even fruit (think cherries!) can be found on the seemingly endless pages of Lil Sugarplum. The clips will actually stay in baby hair, even if there’s not much there! The baby hairclips are small and cute as a button, and stay in with a snap of the clip. The alligator clips are larger and work perfectly on a toddler, and are lined with velcro to ensure they stick. My favorite design is the little pink butterfly, which goes with pretty much any outfit and comes in two sizes, the alligator clip for a more dramatic look, and the adorable baby clip. The clips are top quality and won’t end up losing tightness after a few wears. The vibrant colors and fabrics are even better looking in person, which is a rarity! Even for newborns, Lil Sugarplum’s stretchy-soft headbands add a splash of color and girliness to any outfit, perfect for meeting grandparents or getting portraits done. Just be prepared for lots of “ooohs” and “aaahs” and other moms asking where to find the clips. I’ve got my eye on a Hello Kitty clip- just irresistible! READ MORE
