My latest travel obsession isn’t a destination (well, that’s for a different post), but rather a bag that’ll get me to any place of my heart’s choosing. I’m a proud member of the “carry-on only club” and that applies to destinations near and far. In fact, on a recent two week sojourn to Asia this past January, I managed to pack everything into one carry on bag, and even had enough clothing options to shoot a few outfit pics. Being this dedicated isn’t easy — it requires foresight, determination, clothes rolling skills, a really great bag, and occasionally sitting on that bag. The first few requirements can be learned, but the great bag — that must be discovered — and finally, after so many years of hauling not-the-greatest carry on luggage around the world, I’ve found Lipault.
What I love about Lipault bags is that they are made from soft nylon that is incredibly durable but also bendable and has more give than traditional luggage. What this means is that a) I can stuff my bag to the max and then some and b) it’s easier to cram into tighter spaces because the bag sides don’t take up valuable space. The soft material also makes the bag itself very lightweight — an important consideration when I have to stuff the bag into overhead compartments or carry it up or down stairs. Because the soft side luggage bends to accommodate what I’m putting inside, I find that I don’t have to use the outside compartments too often — a plus since I like to keep everything in one place. The wheels provide a smooth roll and I love that there are handles on both sides, making carrying it that much easier. Lipault also contains a collection of 0% Foldable Luggage, which folds flat when not in use and saves valuable space in my already small NYC apartment. The luggage comes in black, brown, grey and five bright colors. This yellow is my favorite and has already garnered many compliments on recent trips. Check out this and larger bags (in case you don’t do the carry-on-only thing) at Zappos.com.
Being on a rather tight clothing budget (yay, tax month!), I’ve decided to invest in jewelry as a way to change up the outfits I have. We’ll see how this plan goes, but so far, it’s opened my eyes to a lot more great jewelry designers. My latest subject of intrigue? Iwona Ludyga Designs.
Several of this Polish designer’s delicate yet eye-catching pieces were spotted on Olivia Wilde this month both on the street and at the Marie Claire April Cover Party. I love that each necklace, earring, bracelet or ring is both delicate and quirky, which makes them great for adding a colorful, eccentric touch to an otherwise classic ensemble. They also layer well, and can be used to dress any outfit up or down without looking gaudy.
Currently, I’m debating snapping up a Tribal Wide Nudes Bracelet (above) or a few Fleur Noir Rings, which I wish I knew about years ago when I was looking for a unique, twig-like wedding band. But there are so many other great pieces to choose from — all of which will be a hit year-round.
It seems that once we enter adulthood, gift-giving becomes exponentially harder. No one registers for anything past their wedding or first baby, and expectations unfairly go up. So when I stumble on a website with unique or quirky gifts that will be used and loved, I’ll bookmark it for later when I’m crunched for ideas. Seltzer Goods, a Brooklyn-based design company, is my newest bookmark — their selection of small well-thought out gifts are cute, witty and functional, the source of many smiles to come. The goods won’t break the bank, but they’ll actually be used (as opposed to that golf putting thingy). Here are my favorites:
1) Seven-Year Pen. I’m a pen person — I love colors but above all, I need a smooth operator, something that makes writing a joy. I have my Bee Happy Pen beside me at all times now, because the cheerful yellow design reminds me of the sun and being outside, and it writes so well! The best part is that it’s designed to write 1.7 meters a day for seven years — this is no throwaway pen.
2) Bee Happy Notebook. I love this lightweight notebook, it reminds me of an old-school tablet but is made of 100% recycled paper. At the moment, I’ve been jotting down notes to remind myself (anyone else make lists like crazy?) of fun things… plan a vacay, go shopping…
3) Nerd Glasses Tote. Didn’t you know that nerds are the new cool? This retro-looking tote is light and durable, and it’s unisex enough that my hubby will carry it. It’s gusseted so it’s bigger than it looks, and it comes with a round wooden tag which can be personalized on the back.
4) Little Brat- Card. This will convey your sweet message with a touch of whit and a big chuckle. Aren’t we all little brats at heart? Look for greeting cards for any occasion and any person in your life. Cards are underrated, in my opinion. Let’s bring ‘em back!
Yes, it’s wishful thinking but I’m seriously dreaming of the beach right now — not just of warm weather and the salty island breeze, but also of bikini days, carefree nights, and happy times. Ahh, it all sounds so distant from the mid-winter, hecticness that is reality — all the more reason I’m trying to bring a bit of vacation (and zen) into my daily life with India Hick’s Sea Urchin Pendant. Crafted by India Hicks, the ultimate example of island chic and inspired living, the pendant pays homage to her life in the Bahamas and her love of the sea and its creatures. I, for one, love the organic feel and diminutive nature of the jewelry, as if I’m holding a little secret close. The sea urchin is also said to bring good luck…luck, that in my case, I hope will bring me an island vacation soon. Available at IndiaHicks.com.

We don’t use the word ‘ultimate’ here lightly at TDO, since the TDO seal of approval is hard to come by. Our testing process is languorous. We test products. We ask our friends for their opinions. We concur about the results. We test them for multiple days, in different situations. Sometimes, in an effort to create a control, we test products on only half our face (which is why I’ve come to prefer my left side as my “best” side.) But after only two wears, I’m ready and quick to bestow it upon Comando’s Opaque Matte Tights. They are the tights of my dreams–tights that aren’t actually tight. Much like their famed silky underwear, these tights feel like next to nothing, with a unique knit blend, which I can only describe using adjectives that sound oxymoron-ish. Words like light, dense, thick, comfortable, and a perfect black. These tights are as opaque as Anna Wintour’s eyes during a fashion show–impenetrable and revealing nothing, not a single line beneath clothes. And the best part? These tights are completely elastic-free, with a dig-free, wide banded waistband. So you can feel comfortable going completely commando this winter.
