Remember how I had OCC? Well, it’s flaring up again.
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (OCC) just debuted its Fragmented Alice Colour Collection and it’s now available! For the first time, the cult makeup artist favorite is collaborating with a painter, Chicago native Gail Potocki, whose hauntingly beautiful, twisted series Fragmented Alice paintings present what the brand calls a “uniquely macabre” take on C.S. Lewis’s Alice in Wonderland.
I checked out Gail’s paintings recently at a launch event, where OCC Brand Manager and Director of Makeup Artistry Courtney Tichman demonstrated the limited-edition collection. After gazing at Alice’s often forlorn, oil-painted expression, enhanced by layers and layers of color, I was instantly inspired to go home and play with my makeup. What seemed like unwearable shades at first in the OCC collection turned out to be delightfully sheer, majestic, even psychedelic! (more…)
With fall fashion’s new bold and architectural looks on my mind, I’m realizing that a polished hairstyle is the only way to complete a look. My current (seemingly unending) obsession with hair continues, and along that vein, my new favorite toy is the Ferrum Professional Styler. Don’t let it fool you, it is so much more than just another straightener. Let me preface by saying that I don’t straight-iron my hair very often out of fear of split ends and brittle dry hair. Ferrum’s new innovative design eases my mind: one side consists of a specially designed German-engineered fabric plate, allowing hair to breathe and retain moisture, while the other side heats and straightens. Besides being gentler and healthier to use on hair, the fabric plate allows me to use thetool at my roots, so a sleeker, professional look is achieved- sans the burnt scalp. Compared with conventional straighteners, my hair feels softer and healthier! The fabric plate is actually designed to encourage volume, so you don’t get the same one-dimensional flat look that other irons create by mashing hair. It’s the best of all worlds- damage and burning are averted without compromising efficacy. (more…)
Butter London is one of my favorite nail polish brands of all time–not only are their colors fantastic, but the names are always fun and remind me of the six months I spent living in London during college. So I was super excited when they decided to branch out and release a makeup collection with all sorts of new products for eyes, cheeks and lips. So far, I’ve only gotten a chance to try two of the eye products, but I totally loved them and can’t wait to pick up some of the lip and cheek stuff soon.
The Wink Eye Pencil in Jaded Jack is a bright, almost neon, lime green creme. I can’t say I have many occasions that call for this shade, but if I did, I would be all over it because I love the texture and staying power of it. Even if this gorgeous green isn’t your shade, don’t despair: the eye pencils come in a lot of shades that are easier to wear, like Indigo Punk, a gorgeous violet shimmer, or Brown Sugar, a basic chocolate brown creme.
I also tried out the Wink Cream Eye Shadow in Inky Six, a baby blue shimmer. Lately, I’ve been really into the creme shadows because they’re super easy and very portable. Indy Six is actually a very wearable shade that still lets you bust out of the neutral zone with ease. The best part is that the products don’t break the bank–both the Eye Pencils and the Cream Eye Shadows are under 20 bucks, which is right in line with some of my other must-have brands like Urban Decay, Stila and MAKE UP FOR EVER. Can’t wait to see more from this fantastic brand!
“Everything that we put on our bodies must be nutritious and safe,” says Horst M. Rechelbacher, the founder of Intelligent Nutrients, who is an active environmentalist changing world of beauty. I couldn’t agree more–it makes total sense, doesn’t it? I am a firm believer that the food you eat makes a huge difference in your health and appearance, so it follows that what seeps into our bodies from the outside should be carefully sourced as well. I sampled and fell in love with two products from Intelligent Nutrients, the Anti-Aging Serum and Organic Hair Shine.
My skin is fed and glowing with clarity as soon as I apply the oil-based Certified Organic Anti-Aging Serum, which combats dryness as it nourishes. With autumn’s inevitable cool-down on the way, I now feel prepared! The unique blend of argan and acai oils protect skin from fall’s drying wind gusts while boosting elasticity. The results are undeniable, and I can actually see my fine lines (crinkles!) fading. I’m currently using the serum at least once a day before bed, so the oils can work magic and literally create beauty sleep for me. Because of the hydrating properties, I don’t even need a separate moisturizer since it acts as a barrier to seal nutrients and moisture in. I use a gentle cleanser, then just one pump of the serum covers my whole face, then one more pump for neck and decolletage. I massage it in using gentle, circular motions, and it’s soothing and calming as it absorbs. My face actually looks younger in the morning, and any irritation or redness is happily absent. My mind is at ease knowing that night after night, the serum I’m generously applying is certified organic. The treatment also contains antioxidants to affect skin on a cellular level, restoring collagen and elastin production.
Even if you’re not quite ready to put down the coral lipstick and start embracing fall makeup just yet, we’re pretty sure this manicure from Jin Soon x Tibi’s fall polish collection will have you rethinking your nail colors at least. The manicure is deceptively easy to do, but will definitely turn heads because it just looks so freakin’ cool. Simply pick your favorite Jin Soon color (illustrated is Jasper, a shimmering burgundy) and layer her new matte top coat (Matte Maker) on the tips to add a sophisticated tone-on-tone dimension. Or, you can flip it around and paint a glossy tip over a matte nail bed. The great thing about Matte Maker is that when you apply a glossy coat over it, the nail will take the texture of the top-most coat.
“The Fall/Winer 2013 Tibi Collection is all about texture–I did not want to offer only one type of finish,” says Choi. “I’ve always worked with high shine and working with a matte finish has added different dimensions to the line.” The matte coat goes on easily and dries down to a smooth, rich, velvety finish. With 5 new shades (a burgundy, a silver gray, a shimmery black, a sparkling midnight blude, and a holographic olive green) and the Matte Maker, fall manicure options are endless (at least until spring comes around again). You can’t blame us for getting an early start!
The Jin Soon x Tibi collection is currently available at SpaceNK.
After such a hot, wet and frankly, kind of weird summer (not gonna lie)…I’m looking forward to fall. While the summer thunderstorms are still raging, I’ve already begun dabbling into our fall beauty collections. At the top of my list is Laura Mercier’s Limited Edition Dark Spell Collection, which presents an astounding array of colors and concepts that define the mysterious and seductive woman. This cutting edge collection is a necessity for the dramatic femme who wants to make a statement! The eyes are the focus of this collection of dark grays and deep blacks then accented by rich lips, resulting in a smoldering, attention-grabbing look. (more…)
3 More Inches. It seems like every year, usually around this time of year, I’m trying to will my hair to do just that. I dream of long, luscious locks a la Peony Lim, but a combination of summer damage and just not having the right genes, means that my strands are usually looking a little more scraggly than shiny by the time August rolls around. This year, however, thanks to a month of using Michael Van Clarke’s 3 More Inches line religiously, my hair’s looking a lot healthier and glossier than it has in a long time. Though I’m usually never too partial to any particular shampoo and tend to use whatever’s at my disposal, I am now definitely a 3 More Inches convert. (more…)
Like many mixed-race gals, or actually, just gals in general, I find it hard to choose a foundation that matches my exact skin shade and tone — so I usually settle for something sheer in the “Ivory” or “Light Neutral” category. When I first heard NARS was releasing a new Radiant Cream Compact Foundation in 20 shades (yes, 20 shades!), I thought, “Finally! They must have the perfect match!” But alas, the closest I could find was Deauville (a light shade with a neutral balance of pink and yellow undertone). I must confess, I thought this shade would be too dark, too thick and too warm at first, but au contraire, it worked out beautifully! (more…)
I’ve always had good luck with MAKE UP FOR EVER and the streak continues lately with their new Smoky Extravagant Mascara. It has a long-lasting formula that promises no clumping, and it uses a 4D technology to make a microdefining wax complex cover your lashes in ultrablack pigments (how futuristic!). The formula is supposed to add volume, length and curl. I thought that it did a great job with the volume and length–but honestly, I didn’t see a ton of curling. However, my lashes are naturally long and thick, so maybe it was just having a problem with that? By far though, my favorite part about this mascara is the brush–it’s fabulous! It’s cone-shaped with a precision tip, so it separates lashes so as to avoid clumping, but it also means that you can get into the corners and make those lashes as easy to see as the rest of them. That’s not always an easy feat to accomplish on my lashes, so kudos for that. I also like that the formula didn’t smudge or flake at all on me, so I wasn’t wearing more of it under my eyes than I was on my lashes. Thanks, MAKE UP FOR EVER for keeping the streak going!
Right now, I am in love with Vichy’s innovative air-mousse sunscreen, Capital Soleil SPF 50 lightweight foaming lotion, which allows me to indulge in a full-body mousse sensation while getting my much-needed sun protection on quickly. This light-as-air formula instantly smooths and softens the skin minus the annoying chalky residue while safeguarding skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays. The waterproof mousse is genius because it’s not only a pleasure to apply, it gives fantastic coverage unlike sprays which just go into the air, or lotions which take forever to get everything covered. The formula is non-greasy and non-sticky, so it doesn’t end up feeling heavy. I find that even when I’m sweating, it doesn’t end up streaking white like so many other sunscreens–a major faux pas in my book! Over time, the silky texture improves skin quality and helps prevent sun damage, using white grape polyphenols and vitamin E for an antioxidant boost. (more…)
